Over the many years of reporting maritime news, the idea that China could militarize its commercial maritime fleet has been dismissed by most of the shipping community, but a new report published by the US Naval War College shows that this is not only a possibility but has already been accomplished. This report comes weeks after a CSIS report detailed how China militarized its commercial shipyards.

Imagine a scenario where we have a “supply chain crisis” where 1000s of these ships with thousands of missiles are sitting idle, totally surrounding the USA? Imagine if these shipping containers are transported all over each and every corner of the US ready to launch at any time?

Our RUR-5 ASROCa were able to launch torpedoes as well as depth charges. The depth charges were actually tactical nukes. China is going to have real trouble if they think they can get by the U.S. Navy with what we have now.

Most don’t realize it but in WWII the US Merchant Marine sustained more casualties per capita than any other branch of service.
