Hundreds of Ukrainian fighters trapped for more than two months in the vast Azovstal steel works have surrendered to their Russian besiegers after their commanders finally called time on the defense of Mariupol.
A total of 264 soldiers, 53 of them badly wounded, were taken in a convoy of buses to two towns held by Russian-backed rebels in the Donetsk area, Ukrainian officials said Tuesday. It is unclear how many more are left in the steelworks, where as many as 1,000 fighters had been holed up in a network of underground tunnels and caverns in a medieval siege.

Russia is likely to drive a hard bargain in any prisoner swap, especially for soldiers from the Azov Regiment, which was set up as a paramilitary militia unit with far-right links during the original 2014 Donbas war. President Vladimir Putin has consistently portrayed his “special operation” in Ukraine as an attempt to “denazify” the country, and Azov has been the target of his TV propagandists.
Within hours of the Azovstal surrender, the Russian Duma was reportedly debating a law that would prevent Azov Regiment prisoners being swapped for Russians. Vyacheslav Volodin, the parliamentary speaker, said “Nazi criminals” should not be exchanged. Lawmaker Leonid Slutzky went even further, demanding a moratorium on the death penalty be lifted to punish the Ukrainian prisoners.

Don’t forget Romania.
They are very quietly whispering in Russia’s ear that they want their piece of the Ukraine back as well.
The peace negotiations (when they happen) are going to be a lot more interesting and complicated than most folks realize.
Soft and not very scary looking.
Looks like he’d go down easy with a good smash to thr face.
Keep weeping for us, like some silly b|tch.
Your tears are making my day.
Personal attacks on Freepers? What are you on about? You can’t hurt a paid up Putin bot, they’re in it for a few bucks.
Are you a Russian?
You're pulling that out of your *ss!
At no time did Ukraine ever make any such threat!
Unless you can provide a quote, this claim belongs on the trash heap.
Regards,
“At no time did Ukraine ever make any such threat!”
You’re not worth my time. Just look up German Ambassador.
“If he didn’t ask me to kill him, no I would not kill him.”
Well that’s a relief that you would not kill a fellow soldier who did not ask you to kill him.
The question remains: Would you kill a fellow soldier?
“I would rather have my life be taken ...”
Why would you ask a fellow soldier to kill you rather than just offing yourself?
Is it that you think that when you stand before Almighty God you can say “I did not commit suicide?”
Do you think He is going to buy that?
Also, what do you think He will make of your request for another human being to commit murder?
So your God would rather have you go through a wood chipper, where the end result is death anyway rather than die beforehand?
Is that the God you serve?
You: “ I did not commit self murder because I got someone else to do it.”
Almighty God: “Hmm ...”
You: “Because of possible brutal treatment, understand?”
Almighty God: “ Are you sure you want to go with that ?!”
Part two: Why would you not just off yourself rather than get someone else ?
Answer the question.
I have no problem shooting myself in that situation, but there is no guarantee that I would be successful in that.
You should read up on the John Jones, of Utah. He was a caver and he got horribly stuck where there was no way that he could be saved. They couldn’t dig him out and he was in a horribly uncomfortable postion. They injected him with morphine, enough to stop his heart, rather than let him perish naturally, which could take several days.
Are you going to tell me that God would judge those people for ending the life of John Jones when they did, rather than let him die over many days naturally?
I don’t believe that.
“I have no problem shooting myself in that situation, but there is no guarantee that I would be successful in that “
Really?! Seriously?!
Then you have absolutely NO business in the military or, more likely, you are a coward.
Seems like a personal attack on a FReeper.
It’s possible that I might be a coward, sure.
However, I’m measuring it in terms of cost. Being dragged off to Russia, to be slowly pulled through a wood chipper, is not worth the price of bravery if the battle is lost and you are going to be captured and you are going to be dragged through a wood chipper slowly.
However, you do you.
And I suggest that you google "wrong."
Regards,
So you are not competent/capable enough to pull the trigger but willing to have someone else do it?
Dang! You REALLY should not be anywhere near service.
While of course there are innumerable gruesome tortures and deaths possible, your imagination may be running away. In any case why not just fight to the end?
I never said I wouldn’t pull the trigger on myself, but I’d still want the assurance of success than being subject to what many captured Ukranians are facing.
How much assurance of success do you need?
If you could not put the barrel in your mouth aimed upwards then you certainly should be nowhere near a battlefield for your side’s sake.
Lots of people have been maimed by your method, but they did not die.
That’s not enough assurance for me.
As I said, if you are that incompetent you should be nowhere near the battlefield.
Also, if you’re so inclined, you could always fight to the death. Unless of course you are worried that your enemy would inexplicably and unreasonably be so determined to capture you alive in order to torture you to death. Possible, but a REAL stretch.
