I think Russia is trying to giad Ukraine to launch a counter offensive. Russia can do a defense in depth and rain down their ATGMs on Ukie armor and grind their assault to a halt, then launch their counteroffensive once their reserves arrive. The only way the Ukrainians win is with NATO airpower and armor.
