Ukrainian forces have launched a counteroffensive in Izyum, according to Oleh Synegubov, head of the Kharkiv Regional Military Administration.Speaking in a video posted to telegram, he said that Russian forces were retreating in some directions.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has not confirmed the move.
Russia seized control of the city of Izyum on 1 April and has occupied it since.

This, after Austin stating just a few weeks ago that the US objective was to ‘weaken’ Russia.
I have no idea what was discussed, but in my admittedly limited experience, winners don’t call losers.

It all turns on the Ukrainians, and by that I mean the people. There is no negotiation without public support, and at the moment they seem to have the bit between their teeth. They seem to smell victory, vengeance, and the end of the war.
Its not possible to negotiate unless the bulk of the population is behind at least the broad strokes of a settlement.
“Leaders” and their courtiers often delude themselves as to their actual power. They can retain this delusion for as long as the population is willing, complacent or apathetic. But not when they are on the march.
Also this action forces puttin to divert resources. Keeps him from doing what he wants.

Im not sure about that. By far the greatest Russian military concentration is in the area of Izyum. The Ukrainians seem to be attacking into their strength, not weakness. Unless the Ukrainians have some devastating trump card that we dont know yet. Maybe their counterbattery capability is on a level we dont realize yet.
