Downed Russian fighter jets are being found with basic GPS 'taped to the dashboards

Wrecked Russian fighter jets are being found with rudimentary GPS receivers "taped to the dashboards" in Ukraine because their inbuilt navigation systems are so bad, the UK's defense secretary, Ben Wallace, said.

Speaking at the National Army Museum in London, Wallace commemorated those who died in World War II and called Russia's invasion of Ukraine "senseless and self-defeating."

He added there was evidence suggesting Russian military hardware was being pushed to breaking point by the invasion.

"'GPS' receivers have been found taped to the dashboards of downed Russian Su-34s so pilots knew where they were, due to poor quality of their own systems,"

"The result is whilst Russia have large amounts of artillery and armor they like parading, they are unable to leverage them for combined arms maneuver and just resort to mass indiscriminate barrages.".

The Su-34 was first manufactured in the Soviet Union in the early 1990s but is still one of Russia's leading fighter jets.

Ukraine has shared abundant evidence Russia's attempts to patch over issues with old military equipment and bypass equipment shortages.

Ukrainian troops showed a Russian drone covered in duct tape and fitted with a generic plastic bottle top for a fuel cap. In March, Ukrainian troops found Russian army bandages dating to 1978 discarded on a battlefield.

Wallace said Russian vehicles "are frequently found with 1980s paper maps of Ukraine in them" and that soldiers were using "pine logs as makeshift protection on logistical trucks" and attaching "overhead 'cope cages' to their tanks."

Russia held its annual Victory Day military parade in Moscow but canceled the air force flyby over what it said was bad weather.

During his speech, President Vladimir Putin didn't declare all-out war on Ukraine. He instead praised Russian troops fighting in the eastern Donbas region of Ukraine.

Actual GPS units aren’t supposed to work at high speed, so I doubt thisnis literally true.

Maybe Russia’s GLONASS works at high speed.

Depends on the GPS unit. Most civil units have limitations in the design so that a foreign threat can’t use them for missile guidance, but aircraft use the all the time. So it’s just how the unit is built and for what purpose.

Absolute BS. Some old Su-25s are indeed using consumer-grade Garmins for secondary navigation devices, and I see nothing wrong with it, Su-34s don’t.

I would expect 1990's vintage planes to have inertial navigation systems. Those have to be initialized with the coordinates of where you take off from though. My guess is, if this is even true, then that's all it is.

(Must always add a disclaimer to any comment about reports out of Ukraine - if true...)

The Russians (and the Chinese) have a different management method then the west. It is top down with those in then the line between the top and the bottom given little leeway in doing the job (sort my way or the high way on a grand scale)

Rewards are few but failure is punished. So is it surprising that the top seldom gets honest reports on any project?

Besides that corruption is built into the system. Like the VAT in Europe, the person in charge will skim a little off the top until the final project is just a cheap illusion of what was paid for.

I doubt anyone in the military ever expected to go to war, or to use any of the equipment being manufactured so what is the harm in taking just a little for themselves?

Russia can still win (by brute force if nothing else) but if they lose it will be because of institutional corruption built into their system of government.

The exact same thing is true for NATO and the US deep-state. That's what makes it so dangerous.

A very simplistic and stereotypical take. For one thing, a cruise missile costs the Russian military less than a grenade launcher in the US. And the missiles are working just great.

My first Garmin came with a little suction cup.

Russia has no suction cups?

Bummer!

US civilian GPS operates up to 1000 knots and 60k feet.

I’ve used it aboard jets no problem.

And the last time you were in the cockpit of an SU-34 was when exactly?
