Very popular in the Caribbean; back in the day it was an easy way to get milk on ships (feeding goats for the select few probably much easier than feeding cows). Once some got loose on the islands, the rest was history...

Of all places, Florida it is illegal for human consumption of raw milk. Milk producers have these antiquated laws still on the books.

IIRC hogs and goats were placed on the various islands in order to have a locally available source of food for the various countries that sailed those waters.
Spain and Portugal were particularly strong in the Caribbean since they claimed South and Central America.
Goats and hogs were MUCH easier to load, transport and unload than cattle and found surviving on the islands easier as well.

My daughter as a baby was allergic to cow’s milk, but thrived on goats milk we got from a local health food store.

Goats milk by itself would need vitamin supplements, and perhaps could use dilution with water.

My mother’s family was poor BEFORE the depression, she was born in 1933. They did what they could with what they had. They didn’t have vitamins for anyone.
Today there wouldn’t be a problem getting vitamins.... except for the Biden economy.
