Russia warns of ‘military’ retaliation measures over Finland Nato application

Russia has warned that it will have to take “military-technical” steps in response to Finland’s application to join Nato.

The foreign ministry accused the military alliance of seeking to create “another flank for the military threat to our country”.

“Helsinki should be aware of its responsibility and the consequences of such a move,” the ministry added.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “The expansion of Nato and the approach of the alliance to our borders does not make the world and our continent more stable and secure”.

When asked whether Finland’s accession to the military alliance would be considered a threat toward Russia, Peskov answered: “Definitely”.

Earlier on Thursday, Finnish leaders said they were in favour of joining Nato and a formal decision would be made this weekend.

Finland, which shares an 810 mile border and a difficult past with Russia, has gradually stepped up its cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as a partner since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

There have been Third Rome nationalist demanding the retaking of Finland for years.

At first no one cared. I mean I sure there are still Knights of the Golden Circle somewhere down south.

The last few years though, Scandinavia as a region has been under pressure and friction with Russia. The Ukraine war popped the zit so to speak, but it has been building.

Again, I was shocked with Sweden and Finland started talking about joining NATO. They worked closely with NATO for decades, but were not talking about joining till recently.

I suggest you go to Europe and talk to a bunch of actual “braindead Europeans”. You are absolutely clueless.

Ukraine has been belligerent since day one in 1991.

I'm unaware of this. Could you identify Ukraine's belligerant acts in the 1990's towards Russia? Or even the 2000's?

i will add that for daily use of FR obviously this is annoying.

but bigger picture, we are completely fractured as a society if FR can be so easily turned against itself. the state has gotten the psychosocial control element down to a reasonably precise science.

another poll question - correlate hours of TV watched (news or otherwise, maybe separate) per week with views on vaxes and the war in ukraine.

i have not watched TV in many, many years but I suspect that is where a lot of the influence is.

Most European nations banned Russian TV channels, what are they scared of? Why are they engaging in censorship?

Russia has done everything possible to seek good relations with Europe for the last few decades, but if all you do is watch CNN you would never know this

“We are treating a massively armed world power as if they were some tinpot dictatorship.”

1. Pidor Putin is a tinpot dictator.
2. Russia is not the ‘massively armed world power’ that the USSR was. Russia can’t even conquer Ukraine.
3. Russia isn’t going to do dick about Finland joining NATO because that will mean war with NATO.

Wartime. Its at a “phony war” stage as far as most of Europe is concerned, but its at an edge. Its undeclared but real. This is way more apparent in Europe than the US, you need to be there.

The US is barely paying attention in comparison.

“Russia has done everything possible to seek good relations with Europe…”

If you don’t count them toppling a government in Georgia, forcefully annexing pieces of sovereign countries, and sending a couple million Syrian refugees flooding into Europe.

Other than that they’ve been great neighbors.

Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 in reverse.

Europe isn't Cuba, and no one other than Russia is talking about stationing nuclear weapons in former Soviet states, or Northern Europe. The only nation putting nukes in the baltics is Russia. Kaliningrad is "Cuba", a detached "island" in the heart of Europe. Neither Finland nor Sweden have suggested stationing nuclear weapons on their soil. But with Russian nuclear weapons in St Petersburg and Kaliningrad, who could blame the Nordic and Baltic states if they DID want their own nuclear weapons?

Peskov said: “The expansion of Nato ...does not make the world and our continent more stable and secure”.

No of course not. Only the expansion of Russia makes the world and the continent more stable and secure.

Russia has not done anything to “seek good relations” with its neighbors. It has been constant threats and warnings for decades.

And I avoid CNN religiously, which is harder to do outside the US than in it, as it dominates US news outside the US. Go try get US cable news coverage in Asia.

Finland deserves what it is going to get.

NATO takes aggressive action towards Russia and blames Russia for being aggressive when it response to the threat.

As a result, we are closer to nuclear war or WWIII than we were doing the Cold War. It insanity.

Have you any idea how hostile and unified Europe is?
