The strangest thing about the debate over parents’ roles and rights in their children’s education is that there is a debate at all.
As former teachers ourselves, we know firsthand that nothing is more valuable to a classroom or school – let alone to individual students – than parental involvement. Of course they should have access to instructional materials teachers use in class. Of course parents should decide when and how morally complicated issues are introduced into the classroom – if at all.
The idea of public school personnel laying claim to children – independent of and even confidential from their parents – would be laughable if it weren’t so frightening. Good teachers bend over backwards to be transparent with their students’ moms and dads. They want parents to be in the loop, part of a team helping each student develop the skills necessary to succeed.
Adults who try to hide what they do with other people’s children for hours at a time, by contrast, have no business in a classroom. Yet somehow a large proportion of America’s school boards, school administrators, and teachers’ unions apparently take as a given this subverted idea that government officials, not parents, are children’s primary educators.
Sadly, this isn’t a new development. Like so many other once-respected public institutions, America’s schools have been breaking down for years now. Declining test scores and political correctness attest to just how far public schools have descended into academic mediocrity and "woke" indoctrination. It took remote learning during COVID-19 to alert parents to the dangers and failings of our school systems.

And it's time for the Courts to UNDO this privilege afforded trannies or whatever they are.
Hopefully parents can do it and perhaps for once the GOP elected officials could help as the GOP has done zero for school reform, with the exception of Youngkin and DeSantis.
Only some of the parents, give a damn.
There are those parents who are lowlife and on drugs and want the state to take care of their kids. These are the problem.
Parents in the suburbs will take a more active part in managing their schools and school boards. This will lead to those schools returning to focus on the three R's of Readin', 'Ritin', and 'Rithmetic.
Parents in the inner cities will continue to treat schools as day care and their kids will be subjected to the three R's of Racism, Raunch, and Radicalization.
A civil, or more likely very uncivil, war is coming.
My wife had the notion that the silent majority, or the right thinking responsible parents would be a barrier to all this BS. The problem is those cultural forces have dissipated to nothingness. It’s different now.
Activists masquerading as teachers have infiltrated our educational system and “must” be identified and expelled.
Indeed - Most of these "sleeping giants" will never wake up.
Absolutely.
The thing about “sleeping giants” is that they tire easily and want to go back to sleep. Let’s hope they can fix enough before their next naptime.
They better wake up quickly.
I hope so too but it hasn’t happened so far. Education has been moving hard-left for decades. Parents protest, the Left pulls back for a little while and then starts moving again. The only way to stop it is to get the federal government out of education.
Somebody has to do it because the NEA and the damn “teachers’ unions” sure as hell aren’t going to do it. They’re just in it for the money.
If the parents live in a Blue State, there will be zero help at the State and probably the county/city level.
If they live in Red States and have a good governor and legislature, they will probably have help at the local level.
I don’t think parents can fix the system. First, “parents” aren’t a monolithic force for good. I keep tabs on the town I just moved out of and the big scandal at the high school this week is that a teacher told someone in a class to “hang on a cotton pickin’ minute”. The crap hit the fan as parents collectively lost their minds in a fit of perceived racism and want the teacher fired. And it will likely happen.
... which is why the swamp is working to delegitimize parents.
2 of my 3 went to public schools, until 4th and 5th grade. That was 30 years ago. Private schools after that. My grandchildren are all home-schooled, except one at a private high school.
Public education in America is in dreadful shape.
One thing is for sure, the parents have been sleeping. Glad to see the are waking up, and that it took a plandemic to finally expose what has been going on in our schools.
“Parents are ‘sleeping giants’ who will fix American education”
Don’t hold your breath waiting. This transition of unaffiliation started many years before probably any of us were alive. Just after the time of the ‘29 bust, the government took control of the public benefits program and roped most into subservience. and programs like welfare, social security, and taking control of state government by using the Guarantee Clause and the SCOTUS in 1946 (Colegrove v. Green) to determine sweepingly that the guarantee of a republican form of government cannot be challenged in court.
So the court took itself out of the decision making as to who determines the final determination of proper government. And with that, the feds opened the door to control and finally by erasing the moralities we prescribed to in earlier times. So things like abortion, prayer in schools, and other “rights” that don’t exist, were invented to control the people, not work for them. And the lack of challenge of these deletions are being trained into the youth that they are the finality of the problem, so the people become lackadaisical and turn into the sheep that can be corralled and herded at need. Welcome to the self imposed utopia that started a hundred years ago.
