Trump’s smackdown of David McCormick shows the risks for Republicans trying a MAGA makeover

Standing before a wall-sized American flag at an American Legion hall here in Northeastern Pennsylvania, David McCormick talked up his background in the Army, called himself a “happy warrior,” and ticked through the reasons he wants to be Pennsylvania’s next senator:

Inflation, the border, the “humiliation” of the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

“What about election integrity?” a woman interrupted from the back. “And CRT!” a man yelled, referring to “critical race theory,” a GOP culture-war hobgoblin.

Suddenly off balance, the cheery McCormick, stocky and with thick, wavy hair, said he’d support voter ID laws and is concerned “parents aren’t involved” in school decisions. But he quickly turned back to the economy and national defense. But

The moment late last month illustrated the challenge for Republicans trying to straddle the remnants of the traditional GOP and the attitudes driving the party today, especially for someone like McCormick.

A West Point graduate who earned a Bronze Star in the first Gulf War, got a doctorate from Princeton, held a jet-setting Treasury job in the George W. Bush administration and, until recently, led the world’s largest hedge fund, McCormick has a brilliant political resume — at least for the version of the party that nominated Mitt Romney for president a decade ago.

"Now McCormick enters the final days of a close race carrying the anvil Trump just dropped on him, unable to break away from the pack despite vastly outspending his opponents."

Poor widdle phoney conservative can't get traction and fool the people like in the old days.

I respect him for his service but that doesn’t mean he is the right person for the job.

Neither is 0z. I respect what Trump has done for America but that doesn’t mean he picked the right person for Pennsylvania.

Kathy Barnette is the best person for Pennsylvania and for America. A real conservative.

Oz has the. best chance of winning the election for Senator. Kathy will have her time, but it’s not now.

She has surged into 2nd place in a very tight race. Oz is barely ahead.

I think you are right. Statewide elections in PA are won and lost in the suburbs of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. The same simpering white suburban women who refused to support Barnette when she ran for Congress a couple of years ago will vote for Oz in 2022.

I listened to Dr. Oz talking in detail about his positions, and also the things Trump and others like, Ben Carson. I think the press and a lot of money is being spent to present Dr. Oz in a different way, AND MANY ON FR ARE BUYING IT.

The man is a good guy. If Trump supports him, then so do I.

McCormick gave thousands to Jeb Bush and was late to jump on the Trump train. He needed to wait for permission from the RINO leadership.

That is not the type of man we want representing Pennsylvania in Washington DC

Bunch of imbeciles cravenly clinging to country club status symbols. They remind me of the middle class in Haiti being overthrown and then doing all they can to get jobs in the new marxist government , however, so as to keep up their appearances and sustain their living standards of bourgeois middle class… simply because the Marxist government itself would recycle the same country club values for its own.

A prime example of that is the Bush welcoming Obama flap to “the exclusive club “ (ridiculous and superficial) of “we want you to succeed”

The reason we are not buying Dr Oz's new-found conservatism is because we have a decade of Oz supporting abortion, juveline sex change surgery, etc.

Before he became a candidate, there is no record of Oz standing up for the US constitution, individual liberty or capitalism.

Therefore, we do not trust Oz's words now.

Ok...I don’t know if what you say is true or not....

I’m going with who Trump is endorsing. Let’s leave it at that.

If 0z wins the nomination I will hold my nose and vote for him ONLY out of respect for President Trump.

But the primaries are where we need to take the opportunity to advance conservative leaders and ignore the talking head pollsters.

0z was a bad choice. Trump’s political history is littered with the bad choices he made thinking he could trust career politicians.

Sorry, Barnette gets my vote next Tuesday.

Contrast that with Rush's comment about the Obungo Administration:

So you admit you did no research for yourself and you will blindly follow a man's advice.

Sorry, but people like YOU are the reason we have a swamp in DC.

Trump is a human. Not a God. Oz sure sounded like a dem all his life. I’m surprised he is running the GOP ticket.

“Sorry, but people like YOU are the reason we have a swamp in DC.”

You obviously don’t know me, so I’ll ignore the insult.

I think I said, that I listened to the man, and what Ben Carson and Trump said about him. Trump was pro abortion at one time.

In short, yes I did the research, and I see a huge dichotomy of what people are saying about the man, and what I hearing from the man himself and others.

Trump has known Oz for years, even before he became a famous TV person.

One last thing, you seem to be a sincere person who has a conviction that I respect. So, why try attacking me as the left does, by going after me personally.

Why not search some of my posts, and my commentary today, My Friend.

I don’t know the man so I’m at ground zero. I’m also not in PA, so I can’t vote.

Sounds like it comes down to supporting the republican who in the end has the best chance of winning, (Reagan’s rule”), in a blue state.

I’m in GA, and I’m dumbfounded that Perdue isn’t getting traction. Might be that he figures he’ll be in a run off with Kemp then beat him. Don’t know his strategy.

2000Mules convinces me that not only did Trump win GA, but so did Perdue, but they lost because of ballot stuffing after the true votes were counted.

Kemp is bad news, I’m voting in GA not PA. Best I keep my mouth shut.

With respect to McCormick's service to our country for which we owe him a huge debt of gratitude, Conservatives such as myself reject George W. Bush, the "jet setting" job at Treasury McCormick held, and his leading one of the world's largest hedge funds -- which has largely contributed to the shipping of jobs overseas, the boondoggle we're now in with everything "Made in China" and God knows what else mess he helped create while at the hedge fund.

No on McCormick.

Legit President Trump has this one exactly wrong. How President Trump doesn't see that this is exactly the kind of person who'll turn on him when Legit President Trump wins again in 2024 is beyond me.

We've seen types like McCormick before. Just NO.

God Bless & keep President Reagan near to his heart.

That was then, this is now.

The Democrat & Republican parties of yesterday are not the same as those today.
