Psychologists found a “striking” difference in intelligence after examining twins raised apart in South Korea and the United States

A new study of monozygotic twins raised apart in South Korea and the United States provides unique insight into how genetic, cultural, and environmental factors influence human development. The new research has been published in the scientific journal Personality and Individual Differences.

“I have studied identical twins reared apart for many years. They pose a simple, yet elegant experiment for disentangling genetic and environmental influences on human traits. This case was unique in that the twins were raised in different countries,” said researcher Nancy L. Segal, a professor and director of the Twin Studies Center at California State University in Fullerton.

...

The researchers found “striking” differences in cognitive abilities. The twin raised in South Korea scored considerably higher on intelligence tests related to perceptual reasoning and processing speed, with an overall IQ difference of 16 points.

I taught grad students in 1990 and found even if they were not the brightest, they tried very hard to become better and were embarrassed if they were not up to par.

Today, their self esteem is far more important to them so they do not try, and they couldn’t care less. “Stupid is cool” seems to be the mantra. Trying means possible failure and mommy isn’t there to fix it if they fail. They are scared to death to even try.

It is why so many younger people say they will not work for a big business. They are scared to death to even try. They fear the unknown, so they make excuses that their ethics won’t let them “sell out” to a big business.

Yes, but the US-raised kid now questions his gender and demands people use his preferred pronouns.

I wonder what the IQ spread would be if the other twin was raised in North Korea?

In NK, children have nutritional deficiencies which impacts IQ a lot. I met a woman from NK not too long ago. Very unfriendly, almost to the point of paranoia. Another SK I know confided in me that she had been raped so many times in NK that she had a fear of all men. Very sad.

Their education system vs our indoctrination system more like it.

“Since the results seem to be an indictment of U.S. television, popular culture, and public schools, I am willing to waive my usual caveats about small sample sizes and endorse these findings without reservation.”

I’m sorry Dr. Fauci but you can’t ignore a sample size of one just because you agree with the results. :-}

If the family was so cohesive in Korea, why were twins being raised apart?

There is a charter school here in Nashua, NH called the Academy of Science and Design. Any student resident in the state of NH can go there for free. They just have to pass a test to get in. There is busing if you live in Nashua. If you live outside of Nashua you need to get a ride.

I pass the entrance to this school on the way to work everyday. My passing coincides with parents dropping off their children. The percentage of Asian ethnicity going to this school is large. Yet the Asian population of NH is about 3%.

There are no expensive organized sports. No baseball fields. No lighted football field with synthetic turf. No hockey team. I believe there is a cross country team and a few other low cost organized sports. I also believe children are required to take a language other than English.

It has been the highest rated public school in the state of NH for the last few years. I suspect it is rated higher academically than several of the private schools in the state. With the exception of Phillips Exeter Academy. However, you don’t have to wear a blue blazer to class.

“Kimchee makes you smart.”

Rhymes with smart, anyway.

East Asian culture (at least in Japan and the ROK) compels kids to study 10-12 hours a day,6 days a week and compels adults (at least men, don’t know about women) to work 10-12 hours a day,6 days a week. It shouldn’t be a surprise that they’re smarter than we are.

The East Asians work the stuffing out of their people. But that does not always have the intended effect. If you think you are getting the same quality “work” out of someone working 8AM-8PM (+ commute), you are wrong. Also, there is the forced socialization (e.g., Karaoke & drinking after work). Some like it, some can’t stand it. When people get home they are absolutely exhausted and then they have to do it all over again — up to 6 days a week. It is no wonder their birth rate is so low.

I know more than a few East Asians who fled to the US for their sanity. One was a fiber-optic engineer who happily took a job as a dishwasher in a Chinese restaurant. Really.

It shouldn't be a surprise that they're smarter than we are.

This states that they test better, and not that they're smarter. "Studying to the test" gets a better result but not a better thought process.

All this school learning makes them more indoctrinated.

Your ironic comment is as good as any other. One case of separated twins is what used to be called anecdotal evidence when that term was convenient for discrediting COVID studies on the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine.

Be interesting to know whether the kids would prefer to be reunited and in which country.

If what she says is true, it has nothing to do with our culture vs their’s but the nurturing of the family vs disharmony....

But, I would wager... a thousand dollars that this researcher has found evidence that disputes a 100 years of twin studies around the globe

THAT FINDS NO EVIDENCE OF A GAY GENE.

IOWs all twin studies that I’m aware of shows that twins separated at birth, where one ends up gay, does not show a higher prevalence of the other twin being gay also.

“They fear the unknown, so they make excuses that their ethics won’t let them “sell out” to a big business.”

Good post.

The way human psychology works is that humans decide what they want to do.

Then they create an explanation to justify why they did it.

How do you wear a wife beater? They’re liable to come undone no matter how you fasten them to your body.

The twins were born in 1974 in Seoul, South Korea. One of the twins became lost at age two after visiting a market with her grandmother. She was later taken to a hospital that was approximately 100 miles away from her family’s residence and diagnosed with the measles. Despite her family’s attempt to find her, she was placed into the foster system and ended up being adopted by a couple residing in the United States.

What a nightmare.

They did mention that the Americanized twin had been diagnosed with “measles”, and was put through the foster care system. It’s a stretch to say that these explain a large difference in IQ, but it reminds that there may be confounding factors that aren’t accounted for in a sample set of one.
