Former President Trump called his former defense secretary a “lightweight” and a “RINO” in response to a “60 Minutes” interview that covered a series of shocking claims about the former commander-in-chief.
Former Pentagon Mark Esper is releasing a book about his time in the Trump administration this week, and in early excerpts accuses the former president of wanting to shoot racial justice protestors in the legs and fire missiles into Mexico to crush cartels.
In response to CBS’ questions about the interview, Trump disputed those allegations and others, accusing Esper of being a failure as defense secretary.
“Mark Esper was weak and totally ineffective and because of it, I had to run the military,” said the statement from Trump to 60 Minutes.
“Mark Esper was a stiff who was desperate not to lose his job. He would do anything I wanted, that’s why I called him “Yesper.” He was a lightweight and figurehead, and I realized it very early on.”
In his statement, Trump also refuted claims that Esper had blocked consideration of using the Insurrection Act, which could have deployed active-duty troops to deal with civil unrest.
“This is Fake News,” Trump said of those reports. “The fact is I didn’t need to invoke the act and never did.”

This is a GOOD thing. Exactly what I would have had done. Daisycutter on every cartel home.
“fire missiles into Mexico to crush cartels.”
Sooner or later that will be necessary.
Wanting to? Suggesting these wimps had to hold him back as he was writhing and foaming at the mouth to do so?
Or he openly considered it as an option to these D s whom he thought were trustworthy of top top secret they were hired for?
How predictable. If you want to sell a book these days you gotta have some bombshell claim. Doesn't matter if it's true or not.
Tsar Bomba for Juarez…
What a hoot.
What shape was he prior to this?
Man, Trump picked some real doozies for his team!
“Man, Trump picked some real doozies for his team!”
Yes he did. I will give him some wiggle room as he was new to Washington and didn’t realize the size of the lake the backstabbers and RINOs swam in. Although Dr. Oz?

I agree. He had - or has - an odd sense of who he hires only to find them backstabbers. Politically naive perhaps?
I remember an interview when Trump was younger and lost alot of money. He was asked about his friends helping out. He said that it’s interesting and a revelation because you can’t tell who will be in your corner when things turn against you. He said friends he thought would be with him turned against him and others he never counted on were on his side.
Politically naive perhaps?

“You have to Show them..”
Instead all he had was knuckle dragging, slack jawed Rinos trying to make fools of him and a name for themselves by doing it
And ankle biters like you criticizing him.
Remember that whoever he put forward would have to be approved of by the Senate. McConnell worked against him all the time. I doubt these people were his first picks so he got stuck with them.
Other than Pompeo I can’t really think of a quality appointment made by Pres Trump. This causes me to question his future as POTUS. He’s 75 years old and while his mind is fine, his personnel judgement is not likely to improve. Esper OTOH likely heard these rants correctly but did not realize or chose to misperesent the fact that Trump and the people who came with him from NYC very often speak in exaggerated and bombastic tones in private which are never meant to be taken seriously.
He was there for four years. The staff picks at the start we’re as bad as those towards the end.
Trump provided a vision, but his staff was not empowered to get stuff done. And he had to work within the constraints of our system. This combination made for poor results.
Well, it appears his additions to the SCOTUS may be the beginning of the turning of the tide. Justices are forever, or so it seems.
“Instead all he had was knuckle dragging, slack jawed Rinos trying to make fools of him and a name for themselves by doing it
And ankle biters like you criticizing him.”
So what you’re saying is, he allowed himself to be made a fool over and over again by the people HE selected!
I like Trump a lot, especially his policies, and I would gladly vote for him again, but he was miserable in his personnel picks and that made him much less effective. And making excuses for that shortcoming doesn’t help him.
Hopefully he has learned, that unlike private business where you can hire and fire people at will, getting rid a bad pick in government can be a nightmare.
