‘I’m not doing anything wrong’: Pot-smoking L.A. moms on parenting while high
Los Angeles Times ^ | May 5, 2022 | Adam Tschorn

From the outside, the moms gathered in a Santa Monica living room could have been conferring about carpools, school boards or fundraisers....

The living room belongs to the author of that book, Wendy Brazill, and on a sunny April morning she invited fellow local moms Angie Stocker, Shonitria Anthony and Alyssa Wraylie over to talk not about homework or healthful snacks but about marijuana and motherhood. (Brazill has a blended family of six now-adult children with husband, comedy writer/director Chad Einbinder.) Brazill “absolutely” believes consuming cannabis made her better at being a mom.

***“I know it did,” Brazill, 57, said of her experiences with being a “cannamom,” a hashtag on social media given to mothers who enjoy marijuana while parenting. “Conversations were deeper. Our playtime was more enjoyable. In my head I wasn’t thinking about the bills I had to pay and things I needed to get done before tomorrow. I was actually able to sit with [my kids], enjoy them.”

Stocker, 39, a West Adams comedian/dispensary receptionist with two children, ages 3 and 6, and an Etsy shop side-hustle selling weed-themed merchandise, is one of those who sings the plant’s praises as mommy’s leafy little helper.

“This isn’t like when you’re in college and you’re getting stoned and falling asleep on the couch,” added Wraylie, 44, who lives in Topanga Canyon and describes herself as a “mom, herbalist and nurse” with two children, 6 and 9...

Brazill emphasized that “Why Mommy Gets High,” self-published late last year, is an honest-to-goodness kids’ book aimed at kids and not a cheeky children’s-book parody for adults (such is the case with Adam Mansbach’s “Go the F— to Sleep”). And she thinks “Why Mommy Gets High” could be an appropriate part of the pot-and-parenting discussion starting with preschool-age children.

If it’s wrong to get drunk while watching your kids, it’s
wrong to smoke pot and do it. I think both are wrong.

Parenting requires your sober attention. You are tasked with
protecting kids that can harm themselves and need quick clear
thinking or you could lose them.

Get high when you’re not the sole guardian of young kids
present.

“Kids are different today I hear every mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down”...

A lot of moms really were half drunk or half stoned when the kids got home from school then...

I have a meme about weed from American History X, but it wouldn’t fly here.

I hate drunks too. Used to be one till I sobered up.

I don't know why pot gets a bum rap. It's not without it's harmful side effects of course but booze and tobacco will take you to the grave a lot quicker.

I sure don't favor bring Prohibition back.

Cannabis affects everyone differently and there are so many different strains with different effects. We are only beginning to study and still discovering the thousands of medicinal cannabinoids and terpenes this incredible plant produces.

Some people can actually work and focus better with certain strains because they are normally too high strung and too anxious to actually get anything done. They fear everything and bubble wrap their children to the point where play is impossible. They cant sleep because think too much. A bit of cannabis and suddenly they can function “normal”. It’s less impairing, less addictive and far less toxic versus many psychotropic Rx pills commonly written for anxiety. And nobody has to even smoke it. It can be consumed in almost any prefered manner from capsules to liquids to smokeless inhalers to topical patches/creams. The possibilities are limitless.

Coffee often makes such high strung people go nuts and manic. While people who are low strung use coffee or Rx stimulants daily to feel and work like “normal” people.

Different strokes for different folks...

I have to admit I did weed and grass with my kids when they were young.

We pulled weeds in the garden. And they helped cut the grass.

Mentally ill or highly traumatized people are simply more likely to use cannabis as self medication and it is no longer a criminal offense in many places to do so so they do it more openly. Not a single TWIN study has shown mental illness or any brain changes in a twin from cannabis.

The correlation with tobacco and schizophrenia is FAR stronger than for cannabis and something like 80%-90% of schizoids use some form of tobacco. However people arent publishing correlation studies for agenda and implying it “may cause” their mental illness.

On the other hand, twin studies of alcohol have shown actual brain differences by age 24 and booze is still sold at most gas stations and still a right of passage to drink with your son.

80% of schizophrenics smoke cigs and big tobacco even once pushed it on the mentally ill as a medication:

Twin study showing brain changes by age 24 from alcohol but NOTHING from cannabis:

“Twin studies” are necessarily small. Let’s not diminish marijuana’s dire effects.

Marijuana consumed before age 26 WILL affect the developing brain.

NOT what we need for for our military-aged men or commercial pilots.

“Marijuana consumed before age 26 WILL affect the developing brain.”

Zero evidence of that in studies of hundreds of twins. That is raw scanned data comparing brains of identical people using and not using. Comparing actual direct differences.

Not some statistical BS which is less evidence than we have for cigarettes causing schizophrenia. Just because people with messed up brains are far more likely to be smokers, does not prove a cause.

Cannabis abuse showed ZERO brain difference in twins in the study I just pinged. While alcohol abuse showed clear directly observable differences in the twins even by age 24. Which should be more legal?

Wouldn’t doubt it.

Kids do stupid things even when totally sober.

Make it a package deal and sell it with the companion book, "Why Daddy Gets Drunk".

Also, why do you need to have a pot-and-parenting discussion with your preschooler? How is that an age-appropriate conversation?
