NEW YORK – New York Attorney General Letitia James today announced a record multistate agreement with the owner of TurboTax, Intuit Inc. (Intuit), for deceiving millions of low-income Americans into paying for tax services that should have been free. As a result of Attorney General James’ agreement, Intuit will pay $141 million in restitution to millions of consumers across the nation who were unfairly charged. In addition, Intuit must suspend TurboTax’s “free, free, free” ad campaign that lured customers with promises of free tax preparation services, only to deceive them into paying. All 50 states and the District of Columbia have signed onto the agreement. New York will receive more than $5.4 million for more than 176,000 New Yorkers who were tricked into paying to file their federal tax return.

Once again, people don't know how to read the terms or use the program. It clearly lets you opt out of paying several times, because I just used the free service and didn't pay a dime. Typical NY state AG, shaking down another business while the proceeds will go to her cronies.

I’m much more concerned about getting back less than half what TurboTax said I was going to get.

Apparently the white house is too blame.. but still. Less than half what it said I would get.

Yep. “Here’s your $2 check, Mr. Consumer.”

But you have to fill out ten pages of paperwork and find your receipt.

Isn’t that often the case?

There have been few professions that contribute so little to the wealth of nations while consuming and wasting so much of it.

The worst thing is that now and then you really do need a good one for a legitimate case.

Turbo did me good this year. I hosed myself on a deduction or two because I didn’t keep some 10 and 20 year old paperwork.

Ever since Trump increased the standard deduction to over $20K, I’ve used the ‘free’ turbo tax and have been quite satisfied.

Sister in law who’s in her late 60s paid $161.00 for TurboTax to do her taxes. All she has for income is SS and a small 401k.

Would have taken 15 - 20 minutes had she done it herself on the EZ form and that’s with coffee breaks and lunch.

All people need to do is read the terms of the agreement.

YOU can choose to go with the free service or elevate your
service if you feel you need to.

I felt I needed to because of a more elevated tax situation
this last year.

If I get a refund, I’ll try to give it back. I knew what I
was agreeing to.

Turbo Tax was very deceptive this year. Usually it would ask a few questions up front then say the standard deduction was the way to go. This year it goes straight into 1040 Long form asking all these questions and offering services along the way as it shows low or no refund. Finally at the end it says “Oh, you’ll get more money back with Short Form so lets do that”. Then the refund is much more and 1040 long form services weren’t needed but were charged.

A good judgement imo.

So they each get a check for $30? Big deal.

TT helped me with my rental this year. I finally had a solid year of rent payments. That took the sting out of the property taxes that I could not deduct because my state income taxes alone were $15k. The other $5k in property taxes was completely out of pocket. The rental gross income was reduced by the property tax and insurance. Finally had some decent net income. My long term plan is for the rental income to cover property tax at the rental and primary residence in retirement. Thus far, that looks realistic.

There is no Short Form or EZ Form. There is only the 1040 and 1040-SR
