A record-setting 4.5 million Americans quit their jobs in March, according to data released Tuesday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The data also showed 11.5 million jobs available, indicating a continued advantage for workers as companies and industries across the country – from airlines to teachers- struggle with staffing shortages.
Julia Pollak, chief economist at ZipRecruiter, went so far as to call the current market “the greatest job seekers’ market of all time” in a tweet.

They found out work took effort 🤪
If they are like me, they went Gault.
I’m 65 and I still have recruiters contacting me.
My place lost 16 people last month. I will withhold comment on why.
The Baby Boomer retirement wave is expected to start peaking this year and into next. Remember, the Baby Boomer generation is (or so to be was) the largest chunk of the workforce and they are the dominate demographic in a number of industries especially primary industries like agriculture.
Does your place have a mandatory vax policy?
With Gas this expensive why work if the gubmint largesse pays you to sit home and hit the pipe while jacking off to video games?
Not now. The mask policy was lifted about two months ago.
Me too.
Evidently video games have changed a bit since Pacman and Space Invaders.
Maybe that explains why the original name for Donkey Kong was Jumpman. LOL Or maybe Pole Position was subconsciously about stage dance moves.
They are finding they can make the same money without the commute, office politics and other BS and are working remotely. I have a lead role in a very critical and interesting project, that in the past would have attracted folks from everywhere to be a part of... it requires working at onsite facilities and some travel. I have asked many very talented candidates and junior employees why they weren’t interested and the answer was always the same... sure it was exciting, fascinating, and a promotion, and in the past they would have jumped at the chance. But now, post COVID, ultimately they would rather spend time home with their family and pets, and the money spent on transportation, wardrobe, arrangements for when they are on the road, etc. more than offset the additional pay from the promotion. The world of work will need to re-think compensation if we want to find and retain the best talent for important work.
Don’t worry. Biden recession coming soon. They will all be begging on their knees competing for scarce jobs soon. Back to the good old days.
Are they finding better jobs or what?? Going on the dole?
I thought Dole passed away..
I quit my job.....
Only to land another one with more pay.
Sometimes it’s better to quit a job to get better wages or salaries. I did that a couple times. You’re never in a better place then when you’re working and applying someplace else - best negotiating position as you can go for the gold.
I think you nailed it when it comes to the younger folks—and then when you add retiring baby boomers there is a perfect storm.
This is what I don’t understand with inflation what it is - I thought by now with COVID over we’d be seeing tons of people coming back to work just to get by.
I think a lot of us are getting tired of the office bs. I am in my early 50’s with a military retirement. I quit my corporate job a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, my income dropped by 6 figures, but I really did not need all the crap that gets bought. Better to tighten my belt and spend time with the family.
