Russia loses quarter of combat power in nine weeks of Ukraine war, MoD says

Russia has lost a quarter of the combat power it sent to Ukraine at the beginning of the invasion, British intelligence has found.

The UK’s Ministry of Defence said it could take years before many of the groups are fit for action again.

Tens of thousands of Russian troops are estimated to have been killed during the first nine weeks of war but Moscow has not given a figure. The Ukrainian military has also kept its death toll secret. “At the start of the conflict, Russia committed over 120 battalion tactical groups, approximately 65 per cent of its entire ground combat strength,” the MoD said.

“It is likely that more than a quarter of these units have now been rendered combat-ineffective.

“Some of Russia’s most elite units, including the VDV Airborne Forces, have suffered the highest levels of attrition. It will probably take years for Russia to reconstitute these forces.”

Since President Vladimir Putin ordered his troops into Ukraine on February 24, more than 5.5 million Ukrainians have fled abroad to escape the violence, UN figures show.

Data collected since February 28 shows 1.3 million Ukrainian have entered their homeland. A large number of these are believed to be Ukrainians who were living abroad and returned home either to fight or assist in the war effort in some way…..

The Russians still have Chemical Weapons and Nukes. If Putin gets pushed to the wall, he might just go berserk and just say: “To hell with the Queensbury Rules”.

BS...... They dare not risk total Russian destruction by using nukes or other chemical or bio weapons.

When Putin is on the operating table, it is a totally new game.

The new game involves existential national survival

Soviet doctrine viewed ground units as expendable. The plan was to send in regiments, use them until no longer effective, pull them back, disband them, and use the survivors into newly-forming regiments.

The ideal was to have a continuous stream of combat units moving tnto the front lines. This differed from the US practice of having individual replacements joining existing units.

It’s not at all clear to me that Russia still has their replacement system in place.

I hear that, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense.

I’ve not read anywhere where people are suggesting the demise of Russia as a country, or a change in their borders.

The use of nukes and chemical weapons ONLY make sense when there is an existential threat to a country. And that doesn’t exist (pun intended.)

In fact, if Russian just stopped and pulled back the sanctions would be yanked in a matter of weeks. Oil would drop in price and money would flow back into the country.

The use of Nukes and WMD would ONLY happen because of a personal, individual, issue with the leader releasing them. Putin is not stupid. His staff is not stupid.

The use of even tactical nukes would mean the end of Russia as it exists today. They would a pariah country for decades. And that makes no strategic or logical sense. NOTHING in Ukraine is worth that—and everyone knows that.

If Putin gets pushed to the wall…

Putin is not being pushed, he is the one doing the pushing. This would all end if the Russians just went home.

The point is NATO never threatened Russia.

NATO was always a response to the threat imposed by Russia.

Russia is, somewhat understandably, paranoid.

But NATO is not NAZI Germany, or Napoleonic France, or Imperial Germany.

China is much more a threat to Russian than NATO ever was.

NATO's expansion has always been a response to Russian aggression.

Pukin would end as well. He knows that. That’s why he’s pushing and won’t stop until the Ukes cry uncle.

No it would not end. This thing is evil on all sides. There is a strong argument that Putin is holding back a much bigger problem.

The coming election may give us some time to find an alternative solution.

At least acknowledge that there is equal pushing from the opposite side.

Exactly right. It's go big or go home.

And, BTW, going home means losing your job and possibly your head.

The idea is to make it look like Russia is losing. They aren’t losing. Why would they do this? To make Russia look desperate so that a false flag can be staged to blame on Russia.

It is very interesting that that mentally ill Kinzinger gets a bill passed to insert US troops to defend the borders of Ukraine in case of WMD use.

Looks like the usual set up. We are not allowed to defend our own borders. Chew on that one. We can send our guys to die again for the agenda of the creeps in DC, but not for America.

Poor Pooty / Russia, victims of Ukrainian aggression. Let’s hope the Ukes don’t too far with all their pushing.

Yep. But Putin needs some sort of face-saving deal first. He has to be able to at least pretend that he’s gained something. Yet he cannot be rewarded for his aggression.

It’s a tough balancing act. If only we had someone in the White House who knew how to make deals ...

Prayers for an end to the slaughter when Vlad leaves the earthly realm sometime after May 9th.

One hopes that he enjoys his last Victory Parade.

I agree that Kinzinger appears to mentally ill, playing around with al Qaeda etc. But more importantly has the bill passed? In that case it really opens up for Ukraine to set off a false flag operation, get US boots on the ground in Ukraine etc etc until the nuclear Armageddon is here.

Why do I feel like we are reliving the summer of 1914?

Maybe...maybe not (depending on who takes over for Putin).

The Sun (UK) has said that Nikolai Patrushev will take over and he is the Kremlin spy chief who pushed Putin into the Ukraine invasion in the first place.

On Russian social media, the population is talking about nuclear war constantly. They are so proud of their new missiles and bombs designed specifically to destroy New York City. They joke about retaking Alaska. Putin tells them “We will go to Heaven and the other side will just die”.

We have an insane problem with waves of illegals crossing our southern border. We also have a problem with mentally unstable dictators constantly rattling the nuclear sabre. Missiles flying over our borders cannot be completely discounted.

If blowing 25% of your conventional forces on a small neighbor isn’t ‘losing’, then I’d hate to see what actually is.

Putin is almost certainly going to die soon anyway.
