An 88-year-old retired NYPD cop living out his golden years in Ireland was busted in a dragnet worthy of a Hollywood movie — for keeping an old, decommissioned revolver in his home.

The daring morning police raid was the largest in recent memory in the tiny village of Swanlinbar, County Cavan, population 200, when up to 10 armed officers in six vehicles descended on the picture-postcard hamlet.

When I was there perhaps 20 years ago, I stopped at a nice little hotel in Kells merely to ask directions. When the proprietress heard my accent, she launched into a bitter tirade about George W. Bush. Warming to her task, she shouted, "When you go back, you march right over there and tell him I said so!"

Many Europeans simply cannot envision a country larger than their little towns. I had to suppress a strong urge to laugh right in her face.

Instead, I said, "Of course! I'll go right over to the White House and let him know just how you feel!" My companion and I turned and went out, got in the car, shut the doors, started the engine, rolled out of there and laughed so hard!

Simple reason: the warrant was served by a female cop: she’s the one that organized that ridiculously oversized raiding force.

If a male cop had been tasked, he’d likely have called the guy and asked to check out old pistol for him over a beer.

A police colleague of mine was of Irish heritage and had long-planned to move to Ireland upon retirement. Alas, as a smoker, he never made it. All the while I’m 23 years into my own retirement.
