Paris suspends electric bus fleet after fires

Paris (AFP) – Dozens of electric buses will be taken off the streets of Paris temporarily "as a precaution" after two of the vehicles caught fire, public transport operator RATP said Friday.

Following a second blaze on Friday morning, in which no one was hurt, "RATP has taken the decision to suspend use of 149 electric buses" of manufacturer Bollore's Bluebus 5SE model, the state-owned company said.

The number 71 bus that caught fire in southeast Paris early Friday released thick clouds of black smoke and a strong smell of burning plastic, according to an AFP journalist on the scene.

“The bus driver immediately evacuated all the passengers. Nobody was hurt," RATP said, while the city fire service said the blaze was put out by around 30 firefighters.

A first bus caught fire on the upscale Boulevard Saint-Germain in central Paris on April 4, destroying the vehicle but again causing no injuries.

Bollore's 12-metre (39-foot) electric buses are a familiar sight on the streets of the French capital, emblazoned with the words "100 percent electric vehicle".

On its website, the company says the buses are "fitted with a new generation of batteries... with high energy density and optimal safety" spread around the roof and rear of the vehicle.

On Thursday, The UAW and a group of environmental groups based in the United States filed numerous lawsuits in an effort to block the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) from moving forward with plants to purchase gasoline-powered next-gen delivery vehicles (NGDVs) from Oshkosh Defense. The suits are being launched on the grounds that the USPS failed to comply with environmental regulations and went back on an earlier promise to field all-electric variants.

spread around the roof and rear of the vehicle.

Hint- sit near the front door. Keep your head down.

Fuel tanks also have the potential to horrifically burn passengers in an accident.

However the amount and complexity of electronics required for a fuel tank are far lower versus a giant lithium battery. Even if there is a short in the fuel pump, it is unlikely to blow up the tank since the vapor displaces air required for combustion. On the other hand, Lithium cells can burn even in total absence of oxygen.

It seems far more likely for a giant battery to result in spontaneous combustion. Many of them are made from thousands of cells no bigger than a household battery. If just one catches fire due to some defect out of China, it can cause a chain reaction

Hey Paris,

Just be sure to park the buses outdoors, and well separated from each other and anything important.
