The United States is considering the possibility of transferring frozen funds of the Central Bank of Russia to Ukraine

The US authorities are considering the possibility of transferring assets of the Bank of Russia frozen in the United States to Ukraine.

This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken at a hearing in the Senate Appropriations Committee.

The question now, Blinken said, is whether there are legal provisions in the US that allow forfeiture. This issue is being considered by the staff of the Ministry of Justice.

"We're working very closely with the US Treasury and Justice Departments to explore how we can effectively freeze and seize assets," Blinken said.

During the discussion of this issue, Senator Patrick Leahy said that the US Federal Reserve has frozen almost $100 billion of the Central Bank of Russia.

At the end of February, the European Union banned its citizens from all transactions with the Bank of Russia and persons acting on its behalf and at its direction. The United States made a similar decision: American citizens were forbidden to conduct transactions with the Russian Central Bank, as well as with the Ministry of Finance and the National Welfare Fund.

Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov said that due to Western sanctions, Russia has lost access to almost half of its gold and foreign exchange reserves - about $300 billion out of about $640 billion.

I agree. All of the frozen reserves should go to Ukraine to defend and rebuild.

I hope Putin pays dearly for his invasion of Ukraine, but these assets are not his - they are the Russian peoples, and we will need to deal with the Russian people long after Putin is gone. Imposing Treaty of Versailles-type humiliations on the Russians is short-sighted and likely to cost us in the future.

No I don’t agree. Even the spineless Euroweenies won’t agree to this degree of insanity, or even an attempt. Not to mention here in America, as the chart I posted shows, this war is grossly unpopular with only 6% of the people agreeing with Biden. Unfortunately for me, most of that 6% posts here on tFR.

1. How is this different from Russia keeping the airplanes it leased?

2. Will this make the US be seen as an unreliable place to keep money?

3. Even if we do pass it on to Ukraine, what are the odds that after a regime change here or in Russia we will agree to repay Russia, so end up having to dig in to our wallets to pay for this?

What next, are they gonna take money from Trump because they don’t like his politics and give it to Biden? I think this is a bad move, holding the money for some future release is one thing, but redistributing the money is absolutely wrong and crazy.

The US should claim a percentage for losses to our economy and aid to Ukraine.

Yeah, you’re right, this is the absolute WRONG thing to do. They wanna world war? Because this is how you start one. This is the kind of crap the league of nations pulled with Germany to trigger the rise of Adolph.
