Twitter May Already Be Cashing In On Conservative Users Lured By Musk
Forbes via MSN ^ | Aprio 28 2022 | Robert Hart

Twitter could be gaining millions in quarterly ad revenue from an influx of conservative Twitter users in the days after Elon Musk’s takeover bid, data of followers of major partisan accounts suggests, more than offsetting potential losses from an exodus of left-leaning accounts amid concerns over the billionaire’s approach to free speech and censorship on the platform.

Key Facts Two days following the announcement of Musk’s acquisition of Twitter on Monday, leading conservative accounts gained an average of 17,229 followers while leading liberal ones lost 6,062 followers, according to data from analytics tool Social Blade analyzed by The Verge.

The shift—with conservative accounts gaining roughly three followers for every one liberal accounts lose—appears to be the result of organic “account creation and deactivation,” rather than the platform taking action against rule breaking accounts, a Twitter spokesperson told Forbes.

The influx of users following the top 50 conservative accounts could net Twitter around $5.6 million a quarter in advertising revenue, assuming no overlap between the new followers, Forbes estimates, based on Twitter’s financial report from the last quarter of 2021.

The number of new users following Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday alone (141,556)—the most of any top 50 conservative account—could earn Twitter an estimated $923,000 in ad revenue a quarter, Forbes estimates, with gains to Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) that day worth around $163,000 and $267,000, respectively.

The gain Twitter stands to make from users flocking to follow conservative accounts on the platform after Musk’s announcement outweighs the prospective loss of users unfollowing liberal accounts, which Forbes estimates could lose Twitter nearly $2 million a quarter based on losses from just the top 50 accounts.

The followers were already there for conservatives, and were phantoms for liberals. Twitter could not "all at once" restore the numbers as it would be too obvious. They will be doing this a little at a time until they reflect reality.

If Musk is smart (an he obviously is) he would have stipulated in the deal that he receive a backup copy of the servers prior to the announcement.

Yeah, it's surely not deleting the algorithms for shadowbanning.

The journos at Forbes are hard at work.

They have been shadow banning every conservative and even moderate on Twitter.

Cyrus on the Greg Gutfeld show remarked a couple days ago that he was gaining like 10 followers a minute the day after Musk bought Twitter.

Donald Trump Jr gained 200K followers the next day.
Ted Cruz gained 100K the next day.

I have never been on Twitter in my life. I may even join up now.

Musk has Dorsey on his side. I am sure Dorsey knows where the bodies are buried. He’s been there from even before the start, when Twitter was called something else.

It’s because thousands upon thousands of conservatives joined up or reactivated their accounts (myself included).

The “new” users are the users that were blocked, shadowbanned by Twitter and now the new owner is arriving and the software used to ban people is being removed.

They were there all the time but the democrats lied and blocked them from being seen.

Just like the voters for Donald Trump.

Same here.

I've said here on many occasions that social media is a scourge.

I've come to the (uneducated) conclusion, the real scourge is the intentional, nefarious misuse of algorithms.

Oh, yeah. Ban users, lose ad revenue. Which is fine if you were never interested in making a profit but were interested in becoming a propaganda organ. Less Dorsey the entire board held 77 shares of Twitter, total. That didn't happen accidentally.

“Cyrus on the Greg Gutfeld show remarked a couple days ago that he was gaining like 10 followers a minute the day after Musk bought Twitter.”

Many influential figures have pointed out that when they created accounts on Truth Social they were getting 5 times the engagements despite having a fraction of the followers they had on Twitter. They can’t account for this other than by shadow banning on Twitter.

Same on F-Book. I can pin-point almost exactly when I got shadow-banned there. My memes were getting hundreds of shares each. Then, suddenly, three. Two. None.

I am a 59 year old white male.
I did not sign up for Facebook until four years ago.
Even now, other than keeping up with relatives hundreds of miles away, it is a waste of time.

The only thing Facebook is useful for is Facebook Marketplace.
It is much better to buy and sell used stuff on than Craigslist.

That may have a little bit to do with it but while you were away there were numerous stories of people following conservative accounts and then realizing weeks later that somehow they magically un-followed them. This happened to me several times.

There were tons of stories from big conservative accounts that said their followers steadily sky rocketed until they reached a certain point and would not rise any further or even drop - even though they were rapidly growing on other forums.

I am certain that this growth is not organic. They are cleaning up the place to hide all of their malfeasance before Elon gets the keys to the kingdom.

Unfortunately for them they did it very sloppily and everyone can see what they have done (except you and techcrunch)
