Every possible fear out of the what Bush’s DHS might become (and there were many who were nervous about it, on both sides) were seemingly just optimistic dreams that they DHS wouldn’t ever end up as bad as they’ve gotten now.

No. Unlike the media corporations banning speech, this move is clearly a violation of the First Amendment simply because it is the Federal government making the move. This one can be brought before the courts with complete success.
