It’s been a half-century since airlines started hiring women and people of color to fly passenger planes, allowing a handful of pioneering pilots into the flight deck.
In the decades since, commercial aviation has grown exponentially, democratizing travel and rewiring how Americans live, work and play. But one part of the industry has remained mostly the same. Piloting is stubbornly monolithic: About 95 percent of airline pilots in the U.S. today are male. Nearly as many are white.
Zakiya Percy is one of a small and growing number of people trying to change that. Ms. Percy, 29, used to dream about flying, watching planes pass overhead when she was growing up in San Francisco.
“I told myself as a kid, you’re already a captain on a 777 flying international,” she said. “You just have to get there.”
Now, Ms. Percy, who is Black and a first-generation college graduate, expects to have her airline pilot’s license within a year, bringing her a step closer to that goal.
For many like Ms. Percy, piloting has long been or seemed out of reach. Few women and people of color aspire to fly planes because they rarely see themselves in today’s flight decks. The cost of training and the toll of discrimination can be discouraging, too. Now there’s urgency for the industry to act. Pilots are in short supply, and if airlines want to make the most of the thriving recovery from the pandemic, they will have to learn to foster lasting change.

It was never about an All-Male, All-White Cockpit you racist, America hating commies. It was about competency and safety which isn’t the number one goal now.
This issue is about meritocracy but in the other direction. The airlines haven't merited commitment from competent pilots for some time now and are lowering their standards under the guise of "diversity".
It sounds like the Slime’s “token”, Niraj Chokshi, has a problem with white men. I guess he didn’t know there were so many white men here when he decided to come here.
“I told myself as a kid, you’re already a captain on a 777 flying international,” she said. “You just have to get there.”
I'm torn... is that one of the dumbest statements ever made? Or... so, just shut up and get there.
Join the military, become a pilot, if you qualify, get out of military, go to work for airline.
Typical path. The “if you qualify” is the hard part. Requires math and stuff.
Well, gee, how do white males manage it?!
LOL - whatever
If the airlines want to compromise standards for the purpose of social justice, I would just as soon walk.
She is still one year away from her license. It's going to be a while before she secures a seat on a 777 flying international. Um.. seniority. And years demonstrating competence performance. I would love to check back on her in two years, in five years...
Sorry, but my limit to diversity in pilots is I am not stepping on any plane with a male pilot wearing a skirt. He can serve me coffee but he’s not going to be flying my plane.
Until you lose both engines to Canadian Geese ingestions departing Laguardia Airport in New York and you have to manually land your Airbus, wheels up, in the Hudson River.
Aircraft Computers are not programmed to solve that problem.
They don’t pay airline pilots well for the hours of flying boredom.
They pay them well for the precious seconds during an emergency.
Kick the tire, light the fire, go on “guard”, leave the yard.
What could be easier?
The militia the most diverse and least racist group in ymthr us considering large institutions
When I was in in the 80s women pilots were just getting in They my were lean and mean. Smart.
The squadron commander for hub who did his retirement was black. A colonel. A pilot. Lean and mean and smart
I saw the TBirds Sunday. One at least was a girl. A major.
If she is some kind of an affirmative action plant you would have to convince me.
I go to a seat and order a triple bourbon.
These idiots are going to get us all killed. What about the competence and ability to fly a complex aircraft? What about taking off and landing without crashing into the terminal?
Absolutely. Flying transpac this weekend, so obviously my main concern is gender and racial equity and wokeness in the cockpit…
“So you get on a plane, and you peek into the cockpit, and you see Stacey Abrams at the controls.”
First..you would never board the aircraft..because the nose gear would have already collapsed.
Wait until she learns she has to start off on the puddle jumpers, get hours on those planes, then begin to move up. She’ll probably be in her late 40s before she sees the captain’s chair of a 777.
Have the marines also quit looking for a few good men?
Damn shame, go woke go broke now more than a monetary loss could be our lives. Medical field also fubar’d by this tingle leg doings.
Hiring or selecting people based on skin color, gender and sexual orientation ahead of intelligence, aptitude, ability, skill and experience always elevates efficiency and performance, doesn’t it?
It’s worked miracles for the state and local fgovernment bureaucracies, hasn’t it?
