I guess you are not familiar with Eastern Orthodoxy.
They do the Sign of the Cross in opposite way than Catholics, so he was actually doing it right.
Also, Eastern orthodox service is very long and one should stand up the whole time (there are not even chairs in traditional orthodox churches). So standing up for few hours is quite an achievement! I could not do it.
No wonder then he might feel uncomfortable.
