Russia has successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile that is capable of launching nuclear warheads anywhere across the globe, but the Pentagon has said it is not a threat to the United States or its allies.
In a televised address following the missile's reported launch on Wednesday (April 20), Russian President Vladmir Putin boasted that the missile, officially called the RS-28 Sarmat and nicknamed "Satan II" by NATO, had no equivalents anywhere in the world and would make adversaries "think twice" before making threats against Russia.
But just how much does the diabolically nicknamed missile add to Russia’s nuclear threat? First introduced by Putin in a 2018 state-of-the-nation address as the "next generation" of nuclear missile technology, the Sarmat missile is 116 feet (35.3 meters) long, and weighs 220 tons (200 metric tons).

WHen they say 15 “light” warheads, how many kilotons are we talking about per warhead?
300kt or so?

Still fighting the last “war”. Next one will be way different. That is what we need to watch for.
It is likely redundant.
Maybe some of the old missiles need replacement due to deterioration, so thats one reason for this thing. But otherwise an ICBM is an ICBM. If they work at all, they work well enough for MAD.
F around and find out
...but even MAD is no guarantee that Murphy's Law won't intervene, via the unintentional or unauthorized use of one or more nuclear weapons...
;>)
It’s not even close to being in production
What a bunch of sissies.
The Russians have MIRVs. How 1960’s of them.
Until they can neutralize our sub launched ICBM’s, upgraded land based missiles serve no real advantage to the nuclear war principle of mutually assured destruction, changing only a lessened response time.
“an ICBM is an ICBM.”
Not if one carries multiple warheads each capable of mNeuvering independently!
From what I understand the new missile is still liquid fueled, so it would take about an hour to fuel up prior to launch from silos deep inside Russia. Meaning it’s definitely a first strike weapon, but one that would give us plenty of advanced warning.
500 KT each x 16
Hiroshima = 15 KT.
Multiple warheads are same old same old.
Maneuvering independly only matters if there is a sufficient ABM system to be effective in a major nuclear exchange. There isn’t.
(Just my guess...)
They spend it on the DESTRUCTION of the Untied States. And to all of you flag waving "Willpuddabootinyerassitstheuhmurricanway" fatass old farts joking about their truck convoys and boats sinking would be real surprised if they ever escalate, and play for keeps.
Probably just as deadly as our “Peace Keeper” or “Minuteman” ICBMs only with a very scary name.
“ F around and find out ”
Finding out goes both ways. Their finding out will be a lot less pleasant.
