6.8 SPC or the new high pressure 6.8?

It's a new high pressure 6.8, using a case similar to the 7.62x51/.308 but with a steel case head. In terms of performance, it's about the same as the classic .270 Winchester (which might be a better option for civilians limited to bolt action or semi-auto firearms ;>)...

Yep, 6.8 it is, and a very good-looking piece.

"...The M249 has a higher rate of fire than the M4A1 and is intentionally less accurate to provide greater fire dispersion on the battlefield. The M249 suffers from reliability issues..."

Why doesn't this surprise me?

...and that's he way we roll in the U.S.A. today...

Am I the only one wondering why the completely vaxxed compliant, woke military suddenly interested in lethal weapons for foot soldiers.
Surely it’s for foreign enemies.

"80,000 PSI?? Damn! Even the suppressor will need to be a bit stout."

I have to think they looked into barrel life expectancy. It's not just the projectile that's going to be forced out of the case and into the rifling with that pressure behind it, but also tiny, burning granules of powder. Of course this happens in every rifle barrel every time a round is shot, but generally not with that kind of pressure behind it.

For years, the .220 Swift had a reputation as a barrel burner and it's upper SAAMI pressure limit is 62,000 PSI. Of course, much of the Swift's reputation was brought about during an era of less sophisticated metallurgy than we have today, but still, at 80K PSI + the kind of barrel temps that will be reached during sustained fire (even just semi-auto under combat conditions) I have to think barrel life on these will not be that long.

My favorite pea shooter is the 300 win mag at about 62K psi. It can blow through barrels in 1300-1800 rounds with bullets traveling 3,000 fps or greater.

Actually, made by Sig Sauer, Inc - which is a wholly US company no longer a subsidiary of the German Sig Sauer AG firm. Sig Sauer AG actually shut down their last German manufacturing plant, iirc.

While Sig Sauer Inc is headquartered in NH, I believe these weapons and ammo were developed in their Little Rock Ar facility.

Yeah the Weatherby and RUMs top out around 65K. This is going well beyond that.

The go-to buzz word in military circles these days is "modularity."

Nope "Equity" is.

The M249 was adopted in 1984. It’s not ‘today’s’ USA.

The fire dispersion thing is actually common among actual machine guns. The reliability issues, not so much.

So the British were right in the early ‘50s when they were pursuing a .270 round. That was their original goal for thr P14 in 1914. Now I imagine this day -night-fog-laser-taser-self compensating-all cooks your rats front sight also need a 15 lb. battery of which the operator will need to carry a spare. The compensator seems quite small for a 13” barrel with 80K PSI ammunition. What’s the ammo weigh and what is the expected load out? Grenade launcher? The more I hear about this weapon the more leery I become. 6.8 is only .8 from 7.62. Ammo is going to be considerably heavier than 5.56. This is a real factor for SOGs who lcan’t count on resupply. There is a plethora of other questions as well. Does any have any idea of what level of field testing this jewel has been through?

The 6.8 Fury is a .270 with a 16 inch barrel.

I am curious what it would do in a 20 inch bolt action, but at 80K PSI, that needs some big lugs.

And in a bolt action, something like the .270 Winchester Short Magnum, .27 Nosler, or .270 Weatherby would probably be cheaper, and offer better performance, without the 80,000psi pressures...

The .270 case is more than 1/2” longer.

SIG makes excellent firearms. With one exception every auto handgun I own is a SIG. I am a big fan of the .38 Super, and my SIGs (P220 and a 1911) are the only ones that have been reliable and accurate.

And more recoil!

Possibly; recoil would likely be fairly close to the .270 Winchester. The point is, a civilian can get similar or better performance using an off-the-shelf conventional cartridge, likely at a lower cost (for both firearm and ammunition), and definitely at lower pressures. I guess anyone who wants to, can drop $7,000(?) for the semi-auto version of the SIG rifle, plus however many dollars per round the high-tech .277 Fury ammo runs. Nice to have options!

;>)
