When a situation gets complicated, such as in Putin’s war on Ukraine, some analysts might observe that one side is playing chess while the other side is playing checkers. If one really wants to emphasize how outmatched one side is, an analyst might say that the other side is playing three-dimensional chess. Regular old two-dimensional chess is complicated enough, and when playing it at the grandmaster level can be labyrinthine.
The game of chess is rather like war. For one thing, chess involves strategy and tactics. Given that, perhaps we can learn something about the war in Ukraine and its mastermind Vlad Putin from the former world chess champion Garry Kasparov, who grew up in the old Soviet Union.
On April 20, Business Insider ran Cheryl Teh’s “Russian chess grandmaster and Putin critic Garry Kasparov has outlined the ‘right conditions’ for Putin to be overthrown in a ‘palace coup.’”
Garry Kasparov, a famed chess grandmaster and vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has outlined the conditions necessary for the Russian leader to be overthrown…
"First, the Russian public and Russian elite, they have to recognize the war is lost," he said. "The bad news coming from Ukraine will inspire more people to rise because economic hardship will increase.
"So, military defeat in Ukraine, social-economic revolt, and then you will have conditions, the right conditions, for a palace coup," Kasparov added. "Because many of Putin's inner circle will be looking for a scapegoat and it's always a dictator who should be blamed for all the failures."…
"For a dictator for life, losing a war, it's devastating," Kasparov said. "It's a matter of political survival and in many cases, of physical survival. That's why he has to pretend he is winning the war."

He was eventually beaten by a Chess Playing Supercomputer created by IBM named Deep Blue.
Kasparov is longtime critic of Putin and an interesting and serious guy. He also seems a fairly “normal” guy, especially when compared to America’s chess champ Bobby Fischer.
That's called "damning with faint praise"! Like "Zuckerberg seems a fairly "normal" guy, especially when compared to the Soviet Leader Stalin..."
It just made me chuckle reading that...I just assumed Bobby Fischer had some kind of mental disorder but was good at chess...
Garry is also a strong anti-Trumper and an asshole.
Kasparov is indeed interesting. Except Kasparov has the game wrong. Putin is played poker, not chess. Aside from that, he's spot-on and notwithstanding the slobbering class' love for Putin's faux conservatism, I'm interested in how comparable is Putin's laptop contents to that of Hunter's.
Rasputin may be a lousy chess player but he knows how to play catch the bomb. I’m not a fan of the Ruskie dicktater. Just stating facts.
Why would the political opinions of a chess player — even a good one — be any more valid than those of a popular actress or sportsball star or TikTok “influencer”?
I think we have to look at each person’s opinions ON THEIR OWN MERITS, not what their profession is.
Putin seems detached from reality, and that’s not good in a dictator
He’s doing steroids, he’s posing shirtless with bears, etc., thinking he’s still a 20-year-old ... he’s freaking 70 and can’t realize that
just like he can’t realize that the old Soviet union is gone ... yet he still obstinately tries to put it back together, no matter how much misery & destruction is involved
Putin is a menace ... to the World, and to Russia itself
good riddance ASAP ... by natural or unnatural causes!!
A Grandmaster chess player is very likely to have a much higher IQ than any actress, sports star, or influencer. That said, he didn’t like Putin in the past so it is not surprising he doesn’t like Putin now.
Kasparov is a world champion chess player but a lousy politician*. Putin is a lousy chess player but a world champion politician who got to the top of the greasy pole (as Disraeli put it) in the cutthroat world of Russian politics where losers end up dead. Whatever you might say about his ethics, Putin is a formidable personality, one who will be remembered, for better or worse, long after Kasparov is forgotten. And I mean no disrespect to Kasparov, who is obviously one of the great champions in the game he has taken up as his life’s work.
* He tried his hand at politics in the year of Obama, and crashed in flames.
He’s good buddies with Bill Krystol, Max Boot, and the Lincoln Project.
Putin is a master politician?
Please.
Putin is a stupid gangster who controlled the KGB ... anyone who got in his way he could easily get quietly arrested or shot
He’s even had opposition politicians and critical journalists assassinated
that’s not a master politician, that’s a thug killing his way to the top just like any Mafia crime boss ... and that’s how we should look at him
Putin is a coward and a bully
College professors probably have a higher IQ too and I don’t trust what they think either.
“He was eventually beaten by a Chess Playing Supercomputer created by IBM named Deep Blue.”
That was such a weird PR stunt.
1. IBM beats the greatest chess guy and then immediately gets out of the chess biz. No rematches planned despite public interest.
2. The science(!) and AI narrative gets a huge boost as our best human chess player is defeated. All bow before your HAL gods.
3. IBM makes no further progress in the field since this victory in 1997, 25 years ago.
It doesn’t take a 3D chess player to see the whole thing stunk. Simplest explanation is to take a dive, get a big retirement package.
Garry’s anti Trumpism is solely based on his perception that Trump is/was an ally of Putin.

yawn.... Tom Brady thinks that Putin is a crappy quarterback.
Both Péle and Cristiano Rinaldo think Putin is a terrible soccer player.
Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, Wayne Gretzky thinks Putin sucks at hockey
Leandro Lo, Alexandre Rubeiro, Roger Gracie say that Putin can’t take a punch and would be choked out in 2 seconds... he blows at JuJitsu.
Putin is a murdering former KGB operative fighting a murdering puppet for the CIA and deep state... it’s not a good guy versus a bad guy... It’s a bad guy versus another bad guy.... with civilians caught in the middle and dying by the thousands.... as usual.
Putin said that if NATO was expanded in the former Soviet Republics he’d attack them. That’s why we (the USA/CIA/deep state) have put 200 or so Marines in Estonia and other USA units (paratroopers/artillery/mobile units) in Lithuania... they are human sacrifices or trip wires for NATO involvement.
I think Biden should ask his son to brief us on the energy policy of Ukraine as it pertains to our current energy crisis since he’s an “expert” as was Romney, Pelosi’s family members. They got paid by St. Zelensky’s group... as well as Graham, McCain, Clinton and others....
No rematches because IBM didn’t want to risk losing. They scored a PR home run with Deep Blue II rematch and as they say, quit when you are ahead.
I would say the stem professors have a higher IQ. Most of the rest, I doubt.
If their supercomputer was so great, there was very little probability in losing.
