More than 200 state troopers will need to slim down by the end of the year or face disciplinary actions. The announcement comes under a controversial policy the Texas Department of Public Safety is enforcing to limit the size of officers' waistlines, according to the Dallas Morning News.
The Dallas Morning News obtained documents that state men with waists over 40 inches and women over 35 inches have to track and share their weight loss efforts with DPS. For those who don't trim down by December, DPS can deny them promotions and overtime, as well as remove them from enforcement duties. This policy even applies if the officers pass all other required physical fitness tests.
According to the documents from the newspaper, one officer pledged to "drink no more than one diet soda each day" and another set out to "drastically cut sugar intake in all its forms."
Department leaders insist a trim midsection is necessary for officers to have a commanding "presence" in dealings with the public, according to the report from the Dallas Morning News. As of April, 213 officers – out of about 4,000 total – had failed the waistline requirement. Only two of the 213 also failed the physical fitness test for which officers can choose between rowing tests, a combat fitness evaluation, or a standard assessment that includes a mile-and-a-half run, push-ups, and sit-ups. Officers must undergo physical fitness testing in the spring and fall.
While the waist size matters to DPS, the department stated officers with waists over the limit can still pass using other measures based on height and weight or a percentage of body fat. When the waists are deemed too large, officers are put on a fitness improvement plan that sets eating and exercise goals. Officers are required to follow their plans and decrease their waist size by December 1.
Flame me if you must, but a 40 inch waist for men is more than just pudgy. It’s FAT.
Makes me think of Jackie Gleason as Sheriff Buford T. Justice.
You won’t get any flames from me. I have a 32 inch waist.
33 or 34 here. Let’s everyone post their waist size.
The term used by the AMA is “obease”
It’s been 24 years, but I think I was a 28 inch waist when I graduated High School.
Porky pigs.
You should get the Zot for posting that.
Shaquille O’Neal has a 48” waist. I know he’s an anomaly, but you probably shouldn’t call him fat, if you’re within reach.
33, though cutting season has begun...
At 7’1” a 48” waist probably doesn’t make him fat.
I’m 6’4”. At my slimmest I was 255 pounds and had a 42” waist. I did not have an ounce of fat on me. You might not want to keep painting with that broad brush.

“if you’re within reach.”
LOL Good one.

Your Body Mass Index is 31.
Over 30 is considered obese.
“Let’s everyone post their waist size.”
...ok! I went from a 35 to a 33 inch on the Mediterranean Diet in 2 months! That said, I’d rather have a pudgy “rule of law” Sheriff any day over a skinny, latte drinking PC millennial!!
