'How the hell did you allow the Moskva to be sunk?': TV anchor dubbed 'Putin's voice' rages at Russian navy over flagship's loss as Kremlin still refuses to say how many sailors died

A leading Russian TV presenter known as 'Putin’s voice' has expressed cold fury at the sinking of the Black Sea flagship Moskva.

-snip-

'I am furious about what happened to the Black Sea Fleet’s flagship, Moskva,' said the state TV anchor, sanctioned for his links to Putin.

'I am simply furious.'

'And yes, we say it was quite old, and went through repairs and, yes, this series of ships has vulnerabilities.

'I get it.

'But tell me this: how did you manage to lose it Explain me, why the hell you were in that particular area of the Black Sea, at that time?'

-snip-

Solovyov raged: 'And I don’t care what exactly happened - if indeed [it was] the two Neptune missiles as the Ukrainians said.

'Anyway, since when was a combat ship scared of a missile strike, since it has a defence system?

'So, was something not activated?

'Okay. Even if it was hit with two missiles, and it ignited the ammunition…

'What happened to your fire fighting system?'

There doesn’t seem to be damage below the waterline. Though there is much damage to the superstructure. It is possible that good damage control could have saved the ship. We won’t be getting any accurate information so it’s all just conjecture.

“When russians don’t mention casualties, that’s a big sign all died.”

Well, a hell of a lot of them, anyway.

But proportionally way overloaded with missiles to the point that it would be hard to hit without causing significant secondary explosions. Guess they were counting on its missile defense systems. My guess is that they were poorly maintained and/or crew was insufficiently trained.

What is the Slava class Cruisers’ hull thickness amidships?

What ought it to have been in your view?

“What a dunce. If it was hit by two missiles and the ammunition bunker exploded, no fire fighting or any other system is going to save the ship.”

Well, they can put out the fires, but they can’t put out the holes.

> What a dunce. <

Maybe not. This guy’s rant could be part of a deliberate plan to shift all the attention - and all the blame - on the ship’s command staff.

Putin would rather the average Russian blame the captain for incompetence than blame the guy (Putin) who started the war in the first place.

“Ask the US Navy’s LCS and DD-1000 crews, plus all those other ships with aluminum superstructures.”

I believe the HMS Sheffield was an aluminum ship, and survivors described the ship as “melting” after getting hit.

Weight above the waterline incurs a cost in terms of shiphandling and stability (righting moment).

That said, aluminum burns white hot once it ignites and even water will not extinguish such a conflagration (at those temperatures the fire sucks the oxygen it needs right out of the water (H2O). So by no means is it a perfect structural material for the purpose.

That ship was ready for the scrap heap. Covered in rust. Probably even worse inside. Floating death trap for those men. The Russian “navy” is a pathetic joke.

Designed to go in harms way and do maximal damage to the enemy. So there’s that.

In the Russian case it wasnt about fuel economy really. Fuel economy was always rather important, back to the ironclad days, as it meant longer range (and greater cruising speed for a given range) without refueling. Royal Navy ships, for instance, tended to carry more fuel because they had global commitments, sometimes sacrificing other factors.

Soviet ships tended to emphasize armament, as was the case with the Slave class.

It appears that the ship wasn't in tip top shape. Was that one of their best?

Check out this photo taken onboard the Moskva decades ago.

https://www.reddit.com/r/WarshipPorn/comments/l4mgf5/onboard_the_cruiser_moskva_during_minor_refit_and/

The deck seems to have been rust colored even then.

Is it actual rust, or rust-colored nonskid? You make the call.

just like the US military , a full list of dead, wounded, survivors won’t be released until all next of kin have been notified....and possibly complicated due to missing and unaccounted for.

When russians don’t mention casualties, that’s a big sign all died.

Based on the photo available, that's clearly not the case as, 1.) The photo was taken from a ship standing by, and, 2.) damage control was clearly in progress.

Ships only go down with all hands when they sink within minutes of the hit.

We’ll see. If over 50 survived I’ll be pretty surprised. That’s about what the Turks ‘claim’ they got out.
