An unverified photo claiming to show the Russian warship Moskva stricken at sea has been posted online.
The source of the image is unclear, and the BBC has not verified its authenticity.
Military watchers say the photograph may be genuine. Rob Lee, a PhD student at the Department of War Studies at King's College London, tweeted that it "looks like a legit photo".
And OSINTtechnical, a well-known Twitter account sharing open-source intelligence information, wrote: "I can’t verify the authenticity, but this is a Slava class cruiser and I don’t think any of them have been destroyed in this manner."
The fate of the ship has been hotly contested by Ukraine - which says it sank it with a missile strike - and Russia, which says it sank after a fire on board.

The photo is of the port side aft. The ship is listing noticeably to port. Water canons are spraying the decks and small fires are visible as smoke billows from the superstructure. A dark spot around the water line could be a missile strike.

Ukrainian claims of a missile strike are obviously a lie. We all know the Russians retaliated against Ukraine because of stormy weather.

I assume the rear structure on the ship is a hanger for the ship’s helicopter.

This was hit near where I expected it to be based upon the reports. It likely suffered a catastrophic explosion later while it was getting towed near the main armament.

Sea state looks quite calm in that photo.
Daylight means that it was at least several hours after the 1 AM missile strikes.

All of the Slava class ships were built at the 61 Kommunar yard, in Mykolaiv (Nikolaev), Ukrainian. Obviously, there are Ukrainians who served on these ships and knew them well. The Ukies may even have had the blueprints for the ship as well. They knew were to hit for maximum damage.

What is “contested”? Even Russia has verified the ship sunk. The only date is whether it was the result of a Ukrainian attack, or if it was some sort of accident.
Russia claims it was a fire onboard.
Russia began towing the ship - and it continued to take on water and sank/capsized and dropped.
There was a Ukrainian attack on the ship.
Russia has said that they would ratchet up the air attacks in retribution for the sinking of this ship...
So - Putin denied Ukraine hit it - while simultaneously using the sinking as an excuse for ratcheting up indiscriminate air attacks on several Ukrainian cities.
The Russians can’t even keep their own narrative straight. I’m pretty sure that tells us a great deal about the real story.

Looks like it split apart because of rust. What a dump. The Russian navy is trash.

“Looks like it split apart because of rust.”
Rust is the latest color trend for the Russian navy! The color is featured prominently on the flight deck of their inoperative aircraft carrier, it’s their high tech edge on their armor, and the color is also useful for hiding the bloodstains of dead Russian sailors and soldiers.
In some cases it’s probably the only thing holding these garbage scows together.
