Over the past four years, my Nurture NJ work has allowed me to meet countless New Jersey mothers, many of whom have bravely spoken out about their experiences during pregnancy, labor and delivery. Their stories underscore just how frightening and dangerous childbirth can be, especially for mothers of color.
I have written and spoken many times before about our disturbing statistics: a Black mother in New Jersey is over seven times more likely than a white mother to die of pregnancy-related complications. A Black baby is over three times more likely than a white baby to die before his or her first birthday.
Behind those statistics are the mothers and families I have met. As we recognize Black Maternal Health Week, it is our mission to amplify their stories.
We cannot allow this crisis to continue. It is 2022 and we should not be losing any mothers or any babies due to preventable causes.
This Black Maternal Health Week, let’s continue to raise the voices of these mothers. Together, we will make New Jersey the safest and most equitable state in the nation to deliver and raise a baby.

They’ll just kill white women in childbirth for the sake of equity...
Deadlier for whom? I’d say the baby.
The First idiot and @nd Idiot of New Jersey.
People of strong DNA from the African Continent, generally are better equipped in their physical strength, aren’t MOST of the large heavy, strong players in the NFL of the epidermis that is darker. Sometimes when women do drugs, eat improperly, or get very obese, yeah, it takes a toll on the little human growing in the womb. Is this the fault of people with a lighter epidermis? I wonder if they did a random drug check in N.J, if the lighter epidermis females have a lower drug consumption, tobacco and alcohol and heavy, heavy to obstruct blood vessels etc. I think it is a CULTURAL problem, and each community needs to work to fix it’s problems.
If you define baby as up to 21 years old, I might believe these stats.
Jimmy the Greek? Is that you?
Black culture is deadlier for blacks.
Oh gawd make it stop
Abortion is deadlier for Black children, at least as a percentage of the pregnancies.
Married parents in a stable household does miracles for the quality of life of everyone inside. Of course if you’re gonna insist on Hood-Ratting around and Hoochie-Mamma drama, then yep. Yo life be ratchet.
Perhaps if they showed up for prenatal care things would go better for them?
I bet nobody listened to her then either.
“Childbirth is deadlier for Black mothers and we’re working to change this”
In consideration of decades of leftist policies which gaslight blacks into believing that the dems are ‘for them’ - coupled with all the health BS - and this coming from the wife of RINO tyrant Gov. Murphy:
ROFLMAO
so Black women vs white women?
“Black culture is deadlier for blacks.”
I agree and I wish there were a way to stop it.
Leaders need to step up.
It would likely go a long way to resolve itself with the non woke two parent family. Two parent of course being male and female.
Years ago, I was in a maternity program for low-income people at a Catholic hospital in CA. Virtually all of the other women were lower income black people, all of them “single mothers” and from the black nabe in SF. I was there because my husband’s job had no medical insurance, but the other women were on state benefits. They weren’t Catholic, but their social worker had told them to sign up with a maternity program, and this was the best one in the city.
We had to meet once a week, mostly to get obstetrics care (such as doing the basic heartbeat monitoring, etc. - this was before instant ultrasound - and checking maternal problems, such as diabetes). The dietician was there at every meeting, because the hospital was sort of old-style holistic: eat right, live right, and your baby has a good chance of being pretty healthy unless there’s a problem outside of the normal range, which we’ll try to deal with.
BTW, they served a glass of wine at dinner to new mothers during their stay there! It relaxed the mothers and made them better at breast feeding, which the hospital encouraged.
I’ll never forget the first meeting with the dietician, when we had been told to list all of the things we had had for breakfast, lunch and dinner the day before.
Most of the black mothers had literally eaten only potato chips, Coke, and occasionally some KFC chicken the day before. Potato chips and soda seemed to be the dietary staples.
These young mothers were all on welfare and all got food stamps and every possible support, but they honestly didn’t know how to eat and none of them even had much connection with food (the dietician asked about favorite things they ate at home, and these girls didn’t have any).
So one of the big problems that lower income black mothers have is simply malnutrition. They have the income and the ability to buy foods but they simply don’t know what good eating is, and KFC is about the top of the dining chain for them. And poor nutrition is absolutely the main cause of maternal and infant death, as well as things like mental retardation or various syndromes. And we won’t even go into the effects of drug use.
In my opinion, if you want to improve lower income black statistics, improve nutrition...which means educating people in something as simple and basic as food.
Well, they have a lot more STDs that result in much more difficult pregnancies and a significant amount of black women with sickle cell die during delivery (I had two former students die during childbirth for this reason alone)
