The war in Ukraine is a tragedy to watch. Whether or not like Sean Penn, who claims he’s thinking of taking arms to fight Russia, or like most of the corporate media you are rooting for Ukraine and demonizing Russia, you have to admire Ukrainian pluck. You also have to be astonished at the poor performance of the Russian military, who apparently lost their flagship missile cruiser Moskva in the Black Sea either by missile strike (U.S. claim) or accidental fire (Russian claim). I grieve for the suffering of those displaced by the war and the loss of life. I remain opposed to establishing a no-strike zone over Ukraine or the placement of U.S. troops there.
But for the moment, like my cat following the red laser dot (I concede) my attention is on Elon Musk’s effort to buy Twitter. Like Wretchard, I see this as a critical effort to break the monopoly of news reporting.
I’m old fashioned enough to believe there’s usually more than one side to a story and more than one acceptable belief, and I have long resented the extensive labor it takes to see the other side. How long did it take, for example, to get the truth of the Trayvon Martin matter known if you had not seen the extensive, detailed analysis and almost daily reporting in the Conservative Treehouse and relied only on corporate accounts? When did you first learn, if you were not an internet aficionado, that the George W. Bush National Guard story published by Dan Rather was entirely made up? A long time, if you didn’t go to Free Republic or Little Green Footballs

A long time, if you didn’t go to Free Republic or Little Green Footballs
That could very well be.
Your Clarice ping is here.
Interesting idea that Twitter is subsidized because it is an economic black hole but, assuming that is true, why would Musk think it makes sense to buy it?
I can see two reasons why Musk would want to buy Twitter:
1) If run as an actual business (rather than a state-owned propaganda machine), Twitter might generate a lot of profit. Musk has said this openly. He sees real potential for profit, even if it’s not there right now under current management.
2) Musk is tired of living in a world of hidden finance and string-pullers. He wants to pull the temple down and live free.
Rebel Alliance. I like that. Where do I sign up?
She is obviously reading FreeRepubllic and ConservativeTreeHouse and many other sites that belong to the free web-sphere.

Thanks. I can understand the ideological reason but I don’t understand tech enough to know how it can generate profit without becoming something very different from what it is now. FYI, I am not and never have had a Twitter account.

“I grieve for the suffering of those displaced by the war and the loss of life.”
Think this wartime aggression through—starting with “ZucksBucks”.
The Ukranian war suffering and deaths didn’t need to happen!
I think their customers are mainly data brokers.
Regarding Twitter, after observing events of late, I think it is something else entirely.
Twitter serves to keep people in line. For example someone says something unacceptable and Twitter blows up. There are news stories generated, and the offender is unceremoniously and very publicly fired from life.
Now.... who’s to say the explosion on Twitter that started the “lesson” was even real people? Bet it wasn’t.
But we all received a lesson on what is “acceptable” in society. And millions have been reeducated... just like that.
Yep, in spades.
