Opinion: Why climate action holds the key to German security
Deutsche Welle ^ | April 16, 2022 | By Sherri Goodman

Posted on 04/16/2022 9:44:15 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

Sheltering from air raid sirens in Kyiv last month, Ukrainian meteorologist Svitlana Krakovska said what we all know: climate change and the war on Ukraine are both rooted in fossil fuels, and our dependence on them.

This conflict is hastening a difficult but crucial transition for Germany. In recent years, it has made significant strides in recognizing climate's links with national security. This alone has not freed the country from the tether of Russian oil and gas.

The shocking force of Russia's invasion, financed by its grip on the world fossil fuel market, shows that Germany's national security depends on securing energy resilience and greater independence.

Immediate reductions in gas demand through energy efficiency, as well as moving decidedly away from fossil fuels, must be the priority. This approach will also help avoid catastrophic risk scenarios from climate change, from the flooding that has already cost many German lives to the heat waves that have hit the continent in recent years.

US-led investments in clean energy, and a majority for an approved national plan, will provide the market certainty needed to scale up wind and solar energy and green hydrogen technology. And as NATO develops its latest assessment of the security environment and plans its response, the alliance will need to consider the role of decarbonized energy and emission cuts as a powerful lever for global security.

War in Ukraine is a humanitarian disaster, and a frightening display of the threat Putin's Russia poses to the rest of the world. It's a wake-up call that shows Europe what it needs to do to both enable a climate-secure future and a more secure Europe. If the governing coalition responds decisively to end its dependence on Russian fossil fuels, it could also be the catalyst for a safer and more climate-secure Germany.

"moving decidedly away from fossil fuels"

And toward pixie dust. With no workable alternative to replace it with, it's economic suicide. It's sort of like socialists' views on capitalism: get rid of it now and worry about what to replace it with later.

I’m going to start telling everyone that Climate Change caused Will Smith to slap Chris Rock. That’s no sillier than what the greenies have been saying.

And who knows? As a token of gratitude, Smith might even offer me a part in his next movie.

Exactly the wrong conclusions. Typical for Deutsche Welle.

Gaia Worship made us massively energy insecure because we depended on Russia for so much of our energy? I know! I’ve got it. The solution is more Gaia Worship!

Idiots.

So, has the "Center for Climate and Security" been funded by covert or overt Russian money, so as to keep Europe dependent on Russia?

The Krauts are stupid.

They let their energy needs and national security be dictated by a weird, mentally ill autistic girl from Sweden.

Because of something that doesn’t even exist....so-called “climate change,” otherwise known as weather.

--- "Sherri Goodman"

While this appears an an "opinion" in Deutsche Welle, it is not a "German" opinion. It is wholly American in residence. And it is important to learn of the "players."

The Center for Climate and Security is in Washington, DC. Goodman, according to the Center's bio is a "summa cum laude graduate of Amherst College, she earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and a masters in public policy degree from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government."

Source: https://climateandsecurity.org/advisory-board/sherri-goodman/

As to the "Center" -- essentially a policy lobbying group, "CCS was founded in 2010 by Francesco Femia and Caitlin Werrell."

From the CCS website, ""Francesco [ Femia ] holds a master's degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), where he focused on European foreign policy and security issues. He served as a mentor and strategist for the Obama Foundation Scholars program, and serves on the Advisory Board of the Nuclear Security Working Group."

Also from the same site, "Caitlin [ Werrell ] holds a master's degree from the University of Oxford, where she focused on transboundary water conflict and security, and a BA from Mount Holyoke College. She sits on the Advisory board of the Nuclear Security Working Group."

As to that Nuclear Security Working Group, it too is a policy lobbying group in Washington DC.

Goodman is an American policy lobbyist writing an opinion piece as if news. It is being "marketed" to the English-language readers of Deutsche Welle. Firstly, "DW, is a German public, state-owned international broadcaster funded by the German federal tax budget, and its first language at the home page is English. Therefore this is aimed at an English-speaking audience, and publishes content in other languages. Oddly the Goodman article seems not to have been translated into German.

Interesting that Washington DC policy wonks are advising Germany about their security, and how "Climate action" is the "key" -- which it isn't. Moreover Goodman's thesis is "global."

One notes that carbon credits is the game, as it was the game when Obama was in Chicago and the first Climate Exchange was trotted out in 2003. The game is making "carbon" pay. Germany "carbon" is part of the game. Because Ukraine....

There's a story coming out of Germany which is advising people to think twice about having a hot shower.

This is what the authorities in Germany are now warning the German public about.

The head of the Federal Network Agency of Germany, Klaus Mueller, said in an interview with NTV:
"You will have to actually ask yourselves a question - whether you really need to take a hot shower seven days a week with gas heating. So everyone in Germany - ask yourself a question - do you really need to take a hot shower?"

His words echoed a similar statement earlier by European commissioner for competition Margareth Vestiger, who advised EU residents to "Control your own and your teenager's showers and when you turn off the water say 'take that, Putin!'"

Why are you and your teenagers cooking that chicken?

Have it raw every once in a while - because we're going to force you to once a month, anyway!

This was BEFORE the Russian invasion of the Ukraine....

"Klaus Müller: From reminder to head of the Federal Network Agency"

"As early as October last year, Müller warned that gas prices would be too high in winter and called on the federal government to take action in impressive words: “There is a risk of terrible energy prices.” Müller recently criticized the one-time heating subsidy for housing benefit recipients of at least 135 euros planned by Housing and Building Minister Klara Geywitz (SPD) as too low to compensate for the increased energy costs. “At least 500 euros per household” would be appropriate."

And speaking of high gas prices:

I find it fascinating that the neocons here are yukking it up about the Moskva - while simultaneously spraying anonymous antitank and antiaircraft missiles all over the European landscape, and proposing that eggshell LNG tankers supply Europe with replacement gas for the cheaper Russian supplies, threading their way through constricted waterways.

It's all fun and games till somebody gets ideas about that combination...
