Chief Justice (SCOTUS) Salmon P. Chase predicts Trump's impeachment 150 years before it happens.
Salmon P. Chase - Lincoln's Vital Rival by Walter Stahr ^ | May 16, 1868 | Salmon P. Chase

Posted on 04/14/2022 2:48:32 PM PDT by Renkluaf

As Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presiding over the Senate impeachment of Andrew Johnson, Chase penned a letter to a friend on the night that Johnson was acquitted of "high crimes & misdemeanors." The author notes that Chase is upset that what should be a judicial process has become a character issue. Chase writes to his friend:

What possible harm can come to the country from the continuance of Andrew Johnson nine months longer in the presidential chair, compared with that which must arise if impeachment becomes a mere mode of getting rid of an obnoxious president?

And again, their definition of “obnoxious” is someone very closely associated with normal citizens and not the banking class and DC butt sniffers.

They hated Trump for the same reason. Jackson was a man of the frontier, a man of action, and a man of principles. He was not a perfect fit for DC.

Some things never change.

Salmon P. Chase

Wasn't he Evel Kneivel's stunt coordinator on that Snake River jump?
People were making fun of him for being named after a fish?

Never heard much about him after that.

Was he related to Justice Samuel Chase?

Did a little checking...Salmon P. Chase was born in NH (later lived in Ohio) whereas Samuel Chase was born in Maryland, so apparently they weren’t related. Samuel Chase was the target of an impeachment himself but was acquitted.

This is mid-century Johnson, the “soft on the south” Democrat former VPOTUS, who was not so much onboard with the post-bellum Republican agenda, not early-century Jackson, who certainly had the characteristics you’ve outlined.

Salmon P. Chase appears to be a very intelligent and honest fellow. He counseled against trying Jefferson Davis for treason. He also said "secession is not rebellion."

He informed federal prosecutors that if they attempted to try Davis for treason, they would likely lose everything in the court room that they had won on the battlefield.

It is also my recollection that Chase is on the $ 10,000.00 bill.

I have long said that Andrew Jackson was the most similar former president to Donald Trump.

That sentence was written long before Trump was president. The author was bemoaning the use of impeachment as a purely political tool because one party didn’t like Johnson.

I hope not!
Indian Removal Act: Primary Documents in American History

The Indian Removal Act was signed into law by President Andrew Jackson on May 28, 1830, authorizing the president to grant lands west of the Mississippi in exchange for Indian lands within existing state borders. A few tribes went peacefully, but many resisted the relocation policy. During the fall and winter of 1838 and 1839, the Cherokees were forcibly moved west by the United States government. Approximately 4,000 Cherokees died on this forced march, which became known as the "Trail of Tears."

Winning the Battle of New Orleans (January 8, 1815) doesn't clear all debts.
