He’s basing that on a calculation the ship had a crew of 500 and 50 were rescued. Do you have a source for the story on evacuation?

How big was the crew? Surely they had inflatable life boats and life jackets.

It was a pretty severe storm, apparently.

It is much harder to do a good rescue in heavy seas.

Heavy seas probably made a lot of radar noise, which may have made detection of the missiles difficult.

No evacuation. 54 were picked up by the Turkish ship. The other Russian ships in the area sailed away and left their comrades behind to die.

How good is uSSR insensitive munitions protoclol ?

And sympthetic detonation design?

And firefighting ability; ships are surprisingly flamible.

Thanks for the weather report on the seas.

I was going to look for that.

“Where are all the Putinas who were telling us it wasn’t badly damaged?”

In fairness I’m nowhere near a Putina and I had a hard time accepting the idea that a mere 700 pounds of explosive was enough to seriously damage this ship.

It’s very disturbing to think two missiles were enough to kill a ship like this.

Given the incompetence displayed thus far, I wouldn’t be too sure of that.

Their source in this article is the Russian Defense Ministry. Are you OK with the attribution?

It wasn’t evacuated. The 54 were pulled out of the water by the Turkish ship last night. The rest went down with the ship last night.

“How good is USSR insensitive munitions protocol? And sympathetic detonation design? And firefighting ability; ships are surprisingly flammable.”

All good questions.

In this case all the answers are now waiting for Bob Ballard to go find them.

If they can cause secondary explosions or start a major fire, then yes it’s possible. Often it’s not the initial damage of the munitions that kills a warship, it’s what follows after.

Anybody ever seen the video of the russian ship showing off its armaments? The missiles misfire and a few crashed into each other and barely made it past the bow.

Was it this one?

If you repeat a lie often enough some dope will believe it.

Large short period waves.

Short period large waves and a disabled ship ... very dangerous. On one of my two Med cruises attached to the 6th Fleet we encountered conditions similar to this north/west of Malta. The ship plowed thru the seas at diminished speed but we took a pounding ... a ship dead in the water without forward speed to maintain steerage is in deep du-du.

My uncle went down with HMS Hood. He was a Royal Marine. She took a direct hit on her magazine from Bismark at 20 miles. She didn’t last as long this cruiser.
