A high-profile face of last year’s Capitol incursion is rejecting a plea deal from federal prosecutors, refusing an offer that would have cost him years in prison.
Richard Barnett entered the Capitol and was photographed sitting at House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s office desk during the riot on Jan. 6, 2021.
Barnett faces a laundry list of federal charges. The deal would have required him to plead guilty to one of the charges.

The charge to which Barnett would have had to plead guilty comes with a sentencing guideline of 70 to 87 months in prison.

Sitting at Fancy Nancy's desk long enough to take a picture, more than 5 years in prison.
Got it! Do we live in a Banana Democracy or what?
Good for him. I hope there are good attorneys willing to take these cases pro bono. They do not deserve to have their lives ruined fighting a corrupt federal government prosecuting them with taxpayer money.
Good for him!
Yeah, I know that Democrats (Hillary, etc.) have done much worse. But what this guy did would be hard to defend in court. It’s not like he was standing outside or just strolling through the Capitol hallways. If I were his lawyer, I’d try to get the Feds to agree to a sentence of less than than four years. Then I’d tell him to take the deal.
A DC jury would not be nearly as generous. You’ve got to live in the real world.
I hope he encourages them to indict Ray Epps...the FBI’s buddy who screamed at people on video to “get in there!....push your way past the barriers!”..... that would be justice - but of course that would not be our FBI.../sarc
Truth is, it only matters who the judge is. Law and justice no longer exists in DC and most of the country.
I’d volunteer for that jury duty.
As a citizen, he was walking in his property and sitting behind his desk.
> I’d volunteer for that jury duty. <
Sorry, pal. The federal prosecutor would probably use one of his challenges to disqualify you, based on your dangerous pro-American beliefs.
If this Barnett guy goes to trial the jury will be stacked against him. After all, it will be held in DC. He’ll probably get 15 years.
As long as Pelosi is in office we have a Banana Republic.
Might as well ask the judge who is paying him off and get a contempt of court charge. What are they going to do, put him in jail?
If Nancy left the door open, why can’t someone walk in to try to chat her up? Were there signs posted, “Do Not Enter” or “Do Not Sit In Nancy’s Chair”? Eventually, with good lawyers, the defendant has a chance to have this thrown out, but it may need to go to SCOTUS to get past the elites in the DC Circuit.
The federal deal should award him a huge amount of money he may have been infected by ignorance by setting at her desk.
“He’ll probably get 15 years.”
This is the one instance in which progressives aren’t asking for suspended sentences for a non-violent protestor. What sentences did the demonstrators who interrupted the Kavanaugh hearings in the Capitol receive?
Sitting at her desk? Give him the same sentence as Smollet.
What a sham!
He’ll be tried a year and a half after the living hell of the DC jail.
That’s been his real world.
