A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows that the number of fatal overdose deaths among teenagers rose from 492 in 2019 to 954 in 2020, an increase of 94%.
"For decades, we've seen overdose rates rising among adults, and teens have been insulated from that," said Joe Friedman, a public health researcher at the University of California-Los Angeles, as reported by NPR. "And now, for the first time, the overdose crisis is reaching teens as well."
The problem fueling the overdoses apparently is fentanyl, according to the study, in the form of counterfeit prescription drugs. Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid.
"Teenagers don't seek out illicit opioids, [but] they do seek out prescription opioids and that has always been one of their favorite drugs: Vicodin, OxyContin, hydrocodone. And they also seek out benzodiazepines," Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug abuse, told NPR.
A lot of the counterfeit versions of such drugs are made with fentanyl, which can be deadly, and teens do not necessarily know what they are purchasing.
"It is estimated that at least one third of those illicitly manufactured pills are contaminated with fentanyl," said Volkow.
"In the past, you would just get sedated," she told NPR. "Now you can take one benzodiazepine, one pill and it can kill you."
According to Families Against Fentanyl (FAF), illicit fentanyl is now the No. 1 cause of death among Americans ages 18-45.
"Between 2020 and 2021, nearly 79,000 people between 18 and 45 years old — 37,208 in 2020 and 41,587 in 2021 — died of fentanyl overdoses," the group calculated using CDC data, as reported by Fox News.
In a report from February, the FAF said, "Fentanyl is the number one cause of death among Multiracial and White Americans ages 18 to 45, and is the number two cause of death among Black and Indigenous Americans ages 18 to 45, surpassed only by homicide and liver disease respectively."
Much of the illicit fentanyl that ends up in the U.S. is made in Communist China and Mexico. It is smuggled across the borders or mailed through the U.S. postal system.

I remember reading an article when Trump was in office. About how the increased border security had forced the drug traffic to go through a checkpoint. As a result much was getting halted.
You can’t have a War on Drugs without Drugs, this is just collateral damage.
The solution is to decriminalize drugs and have the government regulate and distribute “safe” drugs. I write that sarcastically, but there will be some in Congress who will push it.
Weren’t there libertarians claiming drug deaths would go down if we just made more drugs easier to get? Especially weed? Seems the pro-drug side is winning while everyone is losing at the same time.

Sometimes the stereotypes are accurate.

That’s actually probably quite true.
The fentanyl is being mixed in with other drugs without the user’s knowledge.
It takes a drug that was merely addictive and makes it into an instant killer. There have even been reports of drug dealers lacing pot with it.
Just handling fentanyl can kill you. There have been many cases of law enforcement and correctional personnel being exposed to fentanyl and being sickened or seriously injured, often requiring Narcan to save their lives.
This stuff is pure poison and the Chicoms are likely the source of most of it.
