SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Members of California’s first-in-the-nation reparations task force convened in a historic African American church in San Francisco on Wednesday, making their own history as they work to educate the public and develop a restitution proposal for the people harmed by the institution of slavery.
The two-day meeting at the Third Baptist Church in the city’s Fillmore district was the first time the nine-member task force gathered in person since its inaugural meeting nearly a year ago. The meeting comes mere weeks after the group voted to limit restitution to descendants of enslaved Black people.
Morning attendance was light, but the emotions largely jubilant. About a dozen speakers lined up for public comment, some thanking the task force members for undertaking its critical work.
“Everybody in here is a part of history,” Chris Lodgson of the Coalition for a Just and Equitable California, a reparations advocacy group, said before the meeting. “I couldn’t be more excited and blessed, really, to be here.”

I used to think reparations would never happen, but now I’m not so sure. I have a sneaking suspicion that one of my ancestors might have been a slave. Maybe a 25% chance or so. If I can ever prove it, I would be willing to go to court to get my check. I suspect there would be tens of thousands of lawsuits. I can imagine how it would be workable.

If Cali ever had any slaves, I’m pretty sure they were Native Americans enslaved by Spaniards-not black African people picking cotton and working in the kitchen of a plantation-and Cali wasn’t even a part of the US then-so who is supposed to get this welfare posing as reparations?
And Native Americans enslaved by Native Americans! The American Indians practiced slavery of other American Indians - tribal warfare captives and such. Sacajawae a Shoshone was a captive slave who was purchased by her French trapper husband. (Whether she was his slave or wife, there is still some debate!) when Lewis & Clark met her & hubby.

Ok, fine, give them reparations, but as their part of the deal they have to return to the mother country permanently.
