Russia 'moves heavy military equipment towards Finnish border'

Russian heavy weapons including missile systems have been seen moving towards the border with Finland, hours after Russia warned its northern neighbour against joining NATO.

An unconfirmed video uploaded last night appears to show two Russian coastal defence missile systems moving along a road on the Russian side of the border that leads to Helsinki.

The missile systems are thought to be the K-300P Bastion-P mobile coastal defence system, designed to take out surface ships up to and including aircraft carrier battle groups.

The Russian deployment comes as Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she expects her government 'will end the discussion before midsummer' on whether to apply for NATO membership.

Recent opinions polls by a Finnish market research company put 84% of Finns as viewing Russia as a 'significant military threat', up by 25% on last year.

In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov euphemistically warned the move would 'not improve' the security situation in Europe, and Moscow lawmaker Vladimir Dzhabarov added more bluntly it would mean 'the destruction of the country'.

'We have repeatedly said that the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation and its further expansion will not bring stability to the European continent,' Peskov said.

“Nobody who went there believes that. Ask them if you know any.”

I did a tour there. So did my son. I was there in 2007 and all of the folks I deployed with believed in our mission. We left worried about what the politicians were doing, but we didn’t doubt WHY we went.

Great. Another obnoxious, childish, unwelcome Bidenista troll.

FR is overflowing with Bidenista trolls whose lives revolve around Ukraine, while not giving a damn about the US.

Why don’t I see you Bidenistas on threads about the invasion of the US? You Klaus Schwab Puffers simply don’t give a damn about the US. You only care about your “holy” Ukraine.

I support Ukraine in this war and have no love for Putin. But, the US comes first. Always.

Sadly, there are Klaus Schwab Puffers on FR whose lives revolve around Ukraine.

The illegal and immoral Rape of Serbia proved that NATO is a terrorist organization. What NATO did to the brave Serbs is unforgivable. The Iraq invasion was also an atrocity.

I’m sure that the Bidenistas and the Schwab Puffers will be coming along to vomit their childish and humorous insults at me. The trolls are really slithering out of the woodwork.

Excellent post.

“Kaliningrad is armed to the teeth.”

My maternal grandmother was from Kaliningrad. When she and her husband came to the US in the 1890’s, it was part of East Prussia. The home of fighting Germans. I read recently that Prussians were 40% of the force that with the British won the Battle of Waterloo against Napoleon. Never got their share of the credit. Both my mother and I have been fighters for prosperity and justice. My son is now retiring after more than 20 years in Special Forces. I once read that in Spain experts look to the fighting spirit of the mothers when they select bulls for the bull fighting arena. Lithuania, small but high in courage and determination.

Mexico would certainly not want problems with the US. A while ago I read that a poll of Mexicans found 40% of Mexicans would like to come to the US. So to maintain stability we and Mexico need to be nice to each other. A year after Katrina I was traveling the Gulf Coast from Florida to New Orleans, staying at cheap camping parks along the way. In Alabama I spoke with a Mexican who was working there painting newly constructed (post hurricane redevelopment) houses for an Atlanta contractor. He was being paid a dollar below minimum wage. I asked him if he could get paid that much in Mexico, which country he would prefer to livee in? He said he would rather be in Mexico with his family. I then asked what he liked about the US. He said, “Here the police are honest.” I think he identified a very real problem. We really need to do more to help Mexico and countries further south deal with their criminal problems, to reduce border jumping.

I have read a fascinating book on the hot little war US and western troops engaged in near the end of WW1 in northern Russia against the Bolshevics and in support of the White Russians. Lives were lost on both sides. I don’t know if Russia was at that time Soviet Russia or USSR, but the Bolshevics were clearly in charge of most of Russia, and the White Russians lost. If Russian memories are long, and I think they are, then I think they would consider this a case of the US in an armed encounter against their Russian forces.

Keep in mind that the “White Russians” were not a political party but instead were the people of what is now Belarus and Ukraine. That region used to be called White Russia and the name ‘Belarus’ can be translated as ‘White Russia’.

It gives some clarity as to the lingering hatred of Bolsheviks like Putin against today’s White Russians.

It also explains why Belarus is nervous about having Soviet forces on their soil again.
