As the global food crisis worsens thanks to the ongoing war in Ukraine, wholesale prices in Germany have spiked, seeing their greatest yearly rise in 60 years.
The wholesale costs of fuel, minerals and food in Germany have seen their greatest yearly rise in 60 years, prompting fears of stock shortages and sky-high prices.
Germany — along with a host of other European countries — is already experiencing chronic shortages of a variety of products, including the likes of flour and sunflower oil, with food manufacturers, in particular, struggling to adjust recipes and production methods to keep factory lines moving with substitute ingredients.
The worst is still yet to come, though, according to a report by German Federal Statistics Office Destatis which records the cost of wholesale goods as having gone up 22.6 per cent in March 2022 compared to March last year.
This represents the single greatest jump in prices since record-keeping for the statistic began.
“The high rates of change for wholesale prices mainly derive from increased prices for raw materials and intermediate products,” the federal office’s report reads. “These results refer to the reference date 5 March 2022 and should therefore contain first implications deriving from Russia’s attack on Ukraine.”
“The largest impact on the annual rate of change in March 2022 had the price increase in wholesale trade of mineral oil products (+70.2 per cent),” the report continues. “The high price increase in wholesale trade of solid fuels (+61.9 per cent) as well as metals and metal ores (+55.8 per cent) also contributed to the high rate of change in March 2022.”
Food also saw extreme increases from the previous year, with the price of meat up an average of over ten per cent, while the wholesale cost of eggs, dairy products, cooking oils...

Folks need to dig a little deeper on this one. Trump had everything under control. Putin was behaving. Then Biden took over, and everything went to hell.
So this is not just a Putin problem. It’s a Putin/Biden problem.
Fertilizers are made from fossil fuels. The efforts by the Biden Administration to massively reduce fossil fuel use is literally going to STARVE US ALL TO DEATH WITH A WORLDWIDE SHORTAGE OF FOOD.
These Leftists are not just crazy. They are in the process of global mass murder via starvation.
Good point. B ok th Putin and Biden hate the US. But I think Biden is doing a better job at destroying the US.
The food crisis started waaaay before the Ukraine war...
...small price to pay to combat climate change.....
Maybe we should just close down the entire WORLD ECONOMY again for, say, two years? That should fix things! *SNORT*
I’ve read some parallels comparing now to when we’ve come out of WWII and Vietnam. There’s a period of severe inflation, then another rocket to the Moon. And, we’re just less than a year out of the ME (disaster!), too.
Somehow, I don’t think the right people are in place to make that happen yet again. And even if this current crew KNEW what to do, they’re enjoying our pain too much and it fits their evil ends.
Learn to love beans and rice!

Spices. Lay in plenty of dried spices.

I would say the U.S. Wholesale Price Index is up a comparable amount. The U.S. Deep State just lies more than the Germans. Elections have consequences!
Have you noticed that all cultures have a beans and rice dish?
Beans provide all the nutritional needs of the human body except niacin. Rice is loaded with niacin.
While we're on rice, FYI, every rice sample taken and analysed from all sections of China exceeded the US FDA standard for arsenic.
Don't eat food from China.
Ugh! Luckily I’m OFF white rice for now - too many carbs. Doesn’t mean I don’t have a bunch stashed, though. This week I’m on a quest for Oatmeal.
At least if it all goes south I’ll be able to eat CARBS again - just to survive! “Always Look On The Bright Side of Life!”
When the balloon goes up, I think I’ll bake a Triple Chocolate Cheesecake first. If I die at the oven, I die at the oven. :)
It's happening.
I’m ordering groceries from Walmart on Friday. I pretty much order the same things every week - and rarely order meat because we have plenty on hand, plus our steer will be ready this coming Friday.
I can look back through MONTHS of orders and watch prices creeping up at first, then slowly increasing, then off like a rocket. I’ve even been buying eggs, milk and butter at a local gas station/convenience mart that is known for their cheap prices. For DECADES eggs, milk & butter were ‘loss leaders’ at that store. Prices there have either doubled, or they are limiting purchases...in other words - RATIONING!
SO looking forward to my garden helping with some of the fresh produce issues this season, but not everyone has that luxury or has been planning for it.
It’s going to get ugly. UG-LEE!
