Florida Legislature surrenders to DeSantis on redistricting

After weeks of back-and-forths with Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis on redistricting, the Republican-led state Legislature caved and announced it will effectively cede the map-drawing reins to him.

The move, should it receive DeSantis's signature and withstand legal muster, sets the stage for a very GOP-friendly apportionment of the state's federal districts.

“At this time, Legislative reapportionment staff is not drafting or producing a map for introduction during the special session. We are awaiting a communication from the Governor’s Office with a map that he will support. Our intention is to provide the Governor’s Office opportunities to present that information before House and Senate redistricting committees," state Senate President Wilton Simpson and state House Speaker Chris Sprowls said in a joint statement.

I agree to a point. Let’s see how it turns out in the end.

We know it could have been worse, but is it worth jumping
up and down over?

I certainly hope so.

In 2015 the RINO (not one actual Democrat on it) Florida Supreme Court arbitrarily and belatedly castrated the Republican plan from 2011 and handed about 2 seats to the Democrats, just because they wanted to. And that 2011 redistricting plan was fairly squishy to begin with, as it eliminated the two “obnoxious” conservatives in the U.S. House delegation and created at least 1 district (CD-7) that was destined to switch from R to D.

Bottom line: this ain’t over yet and may not be for years, but the DeSantis plan will be a lot of fun while it lasts. It could give the Republicans 2-4 more House seats, which at least offsets the New York Democrat gerrymander. Expect to see a LOT of media whining about this — if the plan is ever actually implemented — by the same people who would never dare use the “g-word” to describe how Democrats screwed Republicans to the wall in New York, Illinois and California among several other states (Massachusetts, Oregon, New Mexico, New Jersey...).

It’s good to see them finally get a taste of their own medicine, for 2022 at least.

The DeSantis Florida map will offset New York, EVEN IF the NY Court of Appeals goes all hackish and ignores the State Constitution.

If the holding that the NY Map is unconstitutional is upheld on appeal, Florida will NET the GOP additional seats.

IOW: The eeyores were wrong YET AGAIN.

I am pretty sure the constitution says the legislature had to do this.

Democrats never have a problem doing stuff like this when they’re in control of the agenda.

If he wins by more than 5, I think momentum for 24 starts to build.

I’ll be pushing my best friend’s family there. It won’t be hard to do, but she needs to make sure her son votes for him, too, as he’s now voting age.

Desantis version is a recommendation, and an outline of what he is willing to sign. You are correct about the legislature role.
