Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday warned of fighting in Donbas that could result in the biggest war in centuries.
Speaking to the German newspaper BILD, owned by Axel Springer, Insider's parent company, Zelenskyy predicted intense fighting in the coming days.
"It could be a big war in Donbas — like the world has not seen in hundreds of years," he told BILD reporter Paul Ronzheimer.
"We will go on defending our country until the end," the Ukrainian president continued.
This chilling forecast echoes what Ukraine's foreign minister Dmytro Kuleba told NATO members on Thursday.
"The battle for Donbas will remind you of the Second World War," Kuleba said.
He used this warning to immediately call on Western allies to provide more heavy weaponry, including air defense systems, artillery, armored vehicles, and jets.

“If you don’t surrender, everything that befalls you is your own fault.”
Yeah, and you might WIN!
Surrender, and for dam sure everything that befalls you is your own fault, because you have already LOST.
Remember, if you fight and you are killed, you have just died; but you have NOT been DEFEATED! But, if you surrender, you most certainly HAVE been defeated.

Regardless of news reports, its likely from state of unit exhaustion both sides are suffering, the casualties are near even with the Ruskies having a few thousand more. In several places along the ‘front’, its coming down to a question of will and morale as to who prevails.
Feel free to expound further, but I took the 1812 analogy from your comment that Ukraine was barely 30 years old. About what we were in1812. Both countries made free from an oppressor. Both countries attacked by that same oppressor some 30 years later. Both countries asking and looking for allies in their cause. Both countries in situations where, without help, they would lose. I actually think it’s a decent analogy, but happy to hear argument why it’s not.
If Ukraine has less than 50,000 casualties or 20,000 UNIFORMED dead, I’ll eat my hat.

Any favorite sauces?
Sorry, I couldn’t resist.
It could easily be 50,000 dead civilians
—
Probably that in Mariupol alone. Many mass graves will be found after the war ends, unless the Russians win, then none will be found.
No current combatant was alive during WWII.
If you don’t surrender, everything that befalls you is your own fault.

Surrender usually means death, if one is surrendering to the Russians.

“I would never use words that ascribe morality to international affairs.”
So, you would not describe the actions of Nazi Germany with relation to its European neighbors between 1939 and 1945 as “immoral”? Or even “evil”?
How about Imperial Japan between 1933 and 1945?
According the Austrian General Staff, as of April 6 the Ukraine military has suffered 14,000 dead and 16,000 wounded of their 260,200 combat ready troops at the start of the war.
So every one is arguing about the state of the war, who’s doing what to whom. Watch these daily reports for the closest anyone can get to what is actually happening on the ground.

You get the impression from news reports that 20,000 Russian soldiers have died, but only about 200 Ukrainian soldiers.
Fake news is the only good thing Zelensky has these days. He needs to work a peace deal pronto.
Sadly.....this whole military operation could have been avoided had the US not pushed Ukraine into this position.
History will record this was a huge strategic blunder on the part of the deep state.

Only to the extent that ALL war is immoral and evil.
But, no, the only time I take sides is when the US is under legitimate threat, or essential US interests are.
Then, and only then, do I root for a side.
The only place I see essential US interests under threat is in the western Pacific. While we have some limited interests in Europe, they stop at Germany’s eastern border.
Unfortunately, I think the deep state has its back to the wall.
I'm afraid America's financial position is such that we need every country available to take on some old-fashioned American debt, even those that might get us into a war.
No I didn't forget the sarc tag, because it's totally unnecessary, and anybody too dense to perceive it as sarcasm can think whatever he likes.
This is the 2nd time St Zelenksy has invoked the ‘worse than anything the world has seen before’ refrain. He’s outshining Saddam in the firmament of bullshit
Phenomenal post! That’s old school American values.
Evil prospers when good men do nothing.
Many unnecessary arguments here over misunderstood posts. I left it as a question, but rather than clear it up, I am suddenly dense. I won’t elevate. The problem is there are enough here who take your comment literally.
Likewise Ukraine can do whatever they please until/unless some other force determines their future.
***Like... building nukes. Within a few short years of Ukraine bein’ a nation, we signed a nuke nonproliferation agreeement with them, so did the Rukes who have promptly invaded that country twice once it was discovered there were oil & gas reserves there. The Ukes HONORED that agreement.
We have betrayed the Ukes over that agreement due to pansy pantywaist appeasers such as yourself. They are being pushed into a build-your-own-nukes corner.
People like you who cannot or will not learn the lesson of Sudetenland-with-nukes are causing a nukyular precipice in the world.
