Russian President Vladimir Putin instated a new commander to lead operations in Ukraine as officials warn Moscow is looking to shift its focus in eastern Ukraine after more than six weeks of war.
Gen. Alexander Dvornikov, commander of Russia’s southern military district (SMD), will now lead the invasion, first reported the BBC late Friday.
Dvornikov not only has known experience in Russia’s campaign in Syria, but also led military exercises in southern Russia last year, right along Ukraine’s border with the Donbas region.
A western official told the outlet that the change in command will improve Russia’s flagging invasion after it failed to take the capital city of Kyiv despite weeks of shelling and attempts to push ground forces across the country.
"Unless Russia is able to change its tactics, it's very difficult to see how they succeed in even these limited objectives that they've reset themselves," the official said.

I don’t think he’s a Rommel. He talks a good game, but his troops can’t execute.

He has been unable to take Mykolaiv and Odessa.
He was only able to take Kherson because the leaders of Kherson were bribed and hindered defense preparation before the war and then fled to Russia after the war started.
And he’s having a lot of problems keeping Kherson right now.
I think he talks a good game, but hasn’t really had to fight a real war until now.
One of the problems with a regime like Putin’s is that it is dangerous to promote competent ambitious people.
Giving a charismatic general who can lead troops and army won’t do. That guy could become a rival. Better to lose the war with a series of obedient schlubs.

ON THE CHEAP. Maybe no one wants to be paid in rubbles. You know your invasion is a raging success when you have to keep firing and arresting the ones leading it.
I was sitting here trying to remember that name. But that was my original thought!
This is a curious story from what we have generally all disbelieved — the MSM.
Specifically, who is he replacing? There is no mention of anyone now transferred to another duty post, who and where.
And the south would be yellow, too if it weren’t for the traitors of Kherson.
