Some corners of social media are in an uproar over the U.S. Peace Corps guidance on handling racism in Ukraine.
Peace Corps positions in Ukraine are currently not open, but Black Peace Corps volunteers who applied were warned to be prepared to be called the N-word and face other racist behavior while in Ukraine, according guidance on the Peace Corps website that is currently being discussed on social media.
The warning, which includes personal accounts from volunteers, calls for having thick skin and an understanding that the racial discrimination comes from Ukrainians’ lack of exposure to Black people.
“It is not uncommon for Ukrainians to refer to African-Americans as “[N-Word]”. Volunteers of color may be called ‘a monkey’ or may see children’s games with Blackface,” one volunteer wrote.
“Being aware of the history of dehumanization for people of African descent may help inform where this comes from; it does not justify it. It will be at your discretion to determine the intent.”

Score one for Vlad who says there are Nazis in Ukraine.
I just don’t give a rat’s patootie about this anymore.
But the same wouldn’t be true for Russia, or other countries? Ukraine is the only country in the world the Peace Corps has a racism warning for?
Well, at least the FR isn’t all Ukraine all the time in the last couple of days. Apparently there is something else going on in the world.
“It is not uncommon for rap artists to refer to African-Americans as “[N-Word]”.
Strange how that game pays dividends in clarity.
OH, so Ukraine isn’t a country of wonderful, kind, pleasant people! We were never told this, so as to boost the current narrative.
How much money did we send them?
I think there are a lot of people who think America is “the most racist country ever” and who may have experienced, let’s say, a teacher who failed to call on them in class — which was “the most racist thing ever”.
They have no idea how good this country is.
I have recollection that African students in Russia when it was called the USSR got racist treatment back in the day.
If you recall then UN Ambassador Andrew Young said the Swedes were racist back in the 1970’s. I remember that one very controversial to say at the time.
Hey, Ukrainians listen to rap music too.
To whatever degree it actually happens it would be entirely due to the huge influence that Russia’s had in Ukraine for centuries.
Foreigners watch American TV/Movies and listen to American music where the N word is used all the time. Mostly of the time they do not use it maliciously. They just don’t understand the subtleties here.
I also noticed that when black characters were dubbed into Russian or Ukrainian in movies or TV, there was no distinguishing the dubbed accents from the other characters.
Actually there are real Nazis in eastern Ukraine - that region collaborated with Hitler in WWII and still celebrate their “accomplishments” during that period...there are still quite a few people there that still hold the old Hitler Nazi party line.
Black people from the USA people generally aren’t liked anywhere in the world.
The rest of the world’s media doesn’t “sugar coat” the problems some blacks cause in society like our media does.
There are lots of Ukrainian rappers who rap in English, Russian, or Ukrainian.
Well, people on the left tend to be nasty.
It is fascinating to read the stories of black peace corps volunteers in Africa.
If they were dark skinned, the light skinned Africans hated them.
If they were light skinned, the dark skinned Africans hated them.
In some countries, failure to speak with a French accent would put them on the hate list, while in other countries failure to speak with an English accent was the issue.
Prejudice is everywhere, and comes in a million guises.
I sure wish the world would care just a little bit about the Christians being slaughtered and kidnapped in Africa. At least two cases of massacres involving over 50 people and kidnapping involving near the same number in the last three weeks.
If you don’t speak the language, you’re putting yourself in danger. If a Ukrainian soldier is wounded, he will receive whatever benefits that a wounded soldier is entitled to. A volunteer will not receive those benefits...or pay, or anything except grief.
There is considerable animosity amongst the various ethnic groups in Europe. They can often tell each other apart and will respond with whatever their upbringing says is appropriate. As for the Nazis, well, there are about a thousand of them and they’re limited to a particular area, but, yes, for a black it would be like being in 1960’s Alabama on a bad night in a bad neighborhood.
Volunteering to fight over there is not the brightest thing anyone can do. But if you’re some easily identified ethnicity or you don’t speak the language, you are putting yourself in unnecessary danger.
