The dangerous opioid fentanyl continues to contribute to overdoses in the United States, though where it’s coming from has changed in the past few years.
From 2014 to 2019, 70 to 80% of fentanyl seized by federal authorities came from China, according to a report from the U.S. Commission on Combating Synthetic Opioid Trafficking.

When you go to downtown Cabo around the marina there are the normal T-shirt, souvenirs shops catering to tourists. There are also a tremendous amount of Pharmacies. Sometimes, every third shop. How much Viagara can they possibly sell?
They even had a Pharma shop at the Cabo airport. My wife bought two tubes of Retina. She said it was $200/tube in the USA. it was two tubes for $110 in the airport Pharma store.
What I wondered was whether these shops were selling the real thing or fake drugs?

I was last in Cabo San Lucas 13 years ago. I was surprised they did not require and Dr’s prescription for your meds. You asked, they sold. Or at least for the low level meds we were asking about.

Probably are real and totally fine. USA has much stricter laws and regulations on pharmaceuticals. That plus I'm sure other things end up driving up the costs. Whenever we travel overseas, there are some countries we make a point to buy stuff at because it doesn't require a prescription and it is at least half the cost. My wife would always make a point to stock up on amoxicillin when we travel to Thailand or SE Asia. Dental work was cheap in Philippines. China was the one you worried more about fake drugs or filling your teeth with concrete.

Provisional data from CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics indicate that there were an estimated 100,306 drug overdose deaths in the United States during 12-month period ending in April 2021, an increase of 28.5% from the 78,056 deaths during the same period the year before.
The new data documents that estimated overdose deaths from opioids increased to 75,673 in the 12-month period ending in April 2021, up from 56,064 the year before. Overdose deaths from synthetic opioids (primarily fentanyl) and psychostimulants such as methamphetamine also increased in the 12-month period ending in April 2021. Cocaine deaths also increased, as did deaths from natural and semi-synthetic opioids (such as prescription pain medication).
