Confronting thugs when they are stealing parts from a car is a bad idea. My rule of thumb is never to engage in any conversation with anyone in suspect urban areas.
Good rule. In fact I'd say never confront or engage anyone, unless you have to.
If its my car, I am shooting them first. I live in Texas. Its to the point now with unsustainable growth in the Dallas area that I always carry.
Anyone that shoots a police officer should be strung up the same day.

A “life” sentence in Texas means the criminal is out in ten years.

It seems to me that almost all the violence in the US is due to black perps and the government is ignoring that just like almost all the alleged black leaders are ignoring the over 6,000 black on black murders every year and continue to spout retoric about systemic racism. I’m also sure the Biden administration will continue to use the crime explosion as an excuse to disarm law abiding citizens.
I read recently that if 5 black majority cities were not counted in crime stats they would be comparable with northern Europe...PRE EUROPEAN INVASION!
It’s very sad because as a Christian, I believe God values and love every single person of any color or race. And some of the very best Christians, people of God I have ever met have been people of color.
But there is a pattern and the LEFT narrative is of course racism that led Blacks to Poverty and Poverty breeds crime.

Good rule for Joe Citizen and not really a choice for a sworn LEO, on-duty or not, especially given this deputy’s assignment to the car theft squad. Lots of questions here concerning tactics, how he approached, etc. No intent here to add to the sad loss of a good man, just a learning opportunity for other LEO. If the catalytic converter theft gangs have elevated their game from property crime to murder, it means a need for an attitude shift by LE.
Stay safe - stay armed - stay situationally aware.
