While most American cities are opening up and lifting COVID-19 restrictions, one of the biggest cities in the world has been shut back down. Shanghai, China's most populous city with some 25 million inhabitants, was largely at a standstill on Friday as China battles its worst wave of coronavirus infections since the start of the pandemic.

CBS News' Lucy Craft reports the hardships of the lockdown have raised questions about the Chinese government's adherence to its hardline "zero-COVID" strategy.

It’s a very difficult problem.

You have your community infected, you have a single choice.

Do something or do nothing. If you choose to do nothing, get your parents and grandparents out so you can pretend doing nothing is hyper brave.

If you choose to do something, then you have to decide what something to do.

Lockdowns seem to have been superbly effective in Australia, until loosened recently. Lockdowns did not stop many or any deaths in the US and UK. So lockdowns fail the trial. Working sometimes is not success.

But then, what is SOMETHING. What are you going to do? Two years in and we have NOTHING that works reliably.

My in laws are currently in lockdown there.

China will never get over Covid as long as they follow this zero tolerance approach. The vaccines cause lack of rather than more immunity, and they will never achieve herd immunity this way.

They have laughed at our “sloppy, lazy” approach to Covid as if the numbers of cases matter. Sweden did it right.

China sucks. (I hope I can go back someday, but mostly I pray they become free.)

Sweden proved lockdowns don’t work as well as no lockdowns.

Also comparing california to florida, florida proves lockdowns don’t work.

The lockdown places fared worse.

This for a disease over 99.9% of the people can fight off and develop a superior natural immunity response to.

“Also comparing California to Florida, Florida proves lockdowns don’t work.”

Awhile ago when that study came out my brother mentioned it to me. I thought he had finally seen the light. But then he said,
.
.
“But just think how many more people in Florida wouldn’t have died if they DID have lockdowns.”

Lockdowns have worked in China the past two years but they needed an exit strategy. Just because it worked in China, it does not mean it’ll work on a Western country that pride itself on the freedom of movement.

California did NOT lock down. It only shut down small businesses. Big box stores were business as usual with no restrictions.

Please nobody say California was locked down. It wasn't.

The lockdown cures have been worse than this flu-like disease.

The UK and Germany are removing their restrictions, even as they experience high case numbers.

Maybe it is harder for China to change policy, because politically it might look like admitting a mistake.

China is presently under serious transition from relatively free to total subjugation. President Xi acting as the CCP is in the process of taking complete control of everything. All business, all jobs, will be part of the new China Socialism. That includes the entrepreneurs who scrape up a living as street vendors as well as the largest corporation on the globe, Alibaba. Alibaba was the first to go

Attempting to lockdown Shanghai will fail simply because it can’t be enforced.
