Journalists entering a Ukrainian town which saw fierce fighting with Russian forces have found dead bodies of men in civilian clothes strewn on a street.
An AFP news agency reporter in Bucha, near Kyiv, counted at least 20 bodies. At least one man had his hands tied.
Ukrainian forces regained control of the town this week and photos show widespread devastation.
BBC journalists in another part of Ukraine found the bodies of two civilians killed by Russian forces.
Earlier this week the BBC's Jeremy Bowen and his team counted a total of 13 bodies, some of whom may have been Ukrainian soldiers, along a stretch of road between the villages of Mria and Myla.
Ukraine says Russian forces have made a "rapid retreat" from around Kyiv, with one official saying the whole region around the capital has been retaken since the invasion began on 24 February.
The invasion has seen thousands killed in ferocious fighting and has made refugees of at least four million Ukrainians. Western states have responded with tough sanctions against Russia and military supplies for Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has sought to justify his attack by arguing that Ukraine, a former Soviet state with Nato and EU ambitions, was a constant threat and Russia could not feel "safe, develop and exist".
In Bucha, where a photographer for Reuters news agency also recorded dead bodies, holes gaped from apartment blocks hit by shelling and crushed cars littered the streets.
Sixteen of the 20 bodies seen by AFP lay either on the pavement or by the verge. Three were sprawled in the middle of the road, and another lay on his side in the courtyard of a destroyed house.
An open Ukrainian passport lay on the ground next to the person who had his hands tied behind his

Quick question for you. If you don't care about what is happening in Ukraine why are you reading and posting on threads about the war in Ukraine?
And the Polish pogram in 1918 Lwow.
Really, I didn't know the US was not longer a NATO member.
> The two deserve each other. This isn’t America’s fight.
I agree wholeheartedly. Ukraine has the AZOVs and have effectively barred all men from leaving, forcing them to be cannon fodder.
The Russians have sicced the Chechnians on the populace, and those bastards will kill for Allah with no compunction.
Both sides are bad here, and we don’t need to be any part of it. Just push for peace talks. Zelensky will move to Miami with his billion after the war, anyway.
[Please look to our Southern border. We are being invaded by people who hate us and will change the fabric of our nation.]
If Moscow Joe stroked out tomorrow, Harris would replace him. And if Harris choked on her food while cackling, Pelosi would replace her. Do you see border policy changing with these other Dems in the White House? I don’t.
The problem isn’t resources. It’s policy. We need a Republican in the White House. Even Dubya is looking pretty good compared to these Democratic doofuses. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that Trump stays healthy through 2024 and his final term.
If the Euros want to go to war, it’s all on them.
using Muslims to kill Christians should be a war crime in and of itself.
Sounds suspicious. Who caries their passport around with them on the street.
Sounds like Chicago.
The same way some folks want to penalize me for what someone else's ancestors did in the US before my grandparents were born. That's the kind of thinking at work here, holding Ukraine accountable for sins committed 80 years ago. Ukrainians are all Nazis and Americans are all KKK.
“And the Polish pogram in 1918 Lwow.”
Known as Lviv today. It depends on whether or not the city was Polish or Ukrainian or Russian, as that city had the misfortune of being in a bad geopolitical location.
Someone whose country has been invaded by Russia, their town captured by Russian troops, and if their home is still standing, could be destroyed or looted at any moment by Russian soldiers.
“There are no GOOD GUYS in this fight?”
I agree that neither the Russian or Ukrainian governments are “good guys”. They are both corrupt, as are our government, media and corporations. They are all in this together. It’s the civilians and conscript soldiers that suffer. Those are the good guys that are trapped in the middle through no fault of their own.
It’s always the same.
“I’ve asked this question of several very vocal and prolific Ukraine cheerleaders; not one has answered.”
I’ll answer it: We bombed the sh!t out of them. And?
In the 50 years that elapsed since the end of WWII (when most Serbs could claim to have been “good guys”) they supported a lot of evil. First, there was Communism. Second, when communist Yugoslavia fell apart it was Serbian communists which tried to repress the other states in Yugoslavia. Third, after Yugoslavia fell apart, many Serbs started dreaming of a Greater Serbia again. Remember that whole nasty little war in Bosnia? Yeah, that. Then the world got upset over big, bad Serbia killing Kosovars so we bombed the sh!t out of them. And?
I’m not saying it was right. I’m not saying it was wrong. But to bring up Serbians’ aid to downed allied flyers in 1943 as if that proves or disproves anything about 1999 or now is just foolishness.
I am baffled as to how so many Freepers have lost their minds over this war in Ukraine.
I too am disappointed.
Horrifying pics.
But my “propaganda meter” reads very high.
OTOH I’ve no other reason to doubt.
So he dropped his passport with his hands tied? Makes sense.
Kevmo. I do not trust our government, at least in its current form, why should any country??
(Don’t forget Obama and the Maidan revolution that overthrew a legitimately elected Ukraine Government.)
“Sounds suspicious. Who caries their passport around with them on the street.”
If you’re trying to get out of Dodge and into a neutral country a passport is EXACTLY what you want to have.
Try nine million. And when the census-takers reported the population shortfall to Comrade Stalin, he had them shot.
