‘Ghost’ guns are a gift to criminals. It’s time to ban them ((barf alert)

Self-built “ghost guns” are a growing threat to Illinois communities. Before the Legislature ends its abbreviated session on April 8, it should ban them.

Ghost guns are firearms purchasers assemble themselves without serial numbers, making them easy to obtain and hard to trace. Some are “printed” on 3-D printers and include no metal, allowing owners to carry them through metal detectors undetected.

It’s just too easy, and too life-threatening.

--another excerpt from the most despicable editorial on the subject I have yet seen-

"The Giffords Law Center says a 3-D printed assault rifle can fire over 600 rounds, three times the number fired in Florida’s 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting, which left 49 dead and 53 wounded. The code for printing up a gun is posted on the internet."

Since criminals buy guns illegally and can file off the numbers, they have no need of legal ghost guns.

One sees where this is going. The feds will attempt to regulate gun manufacturing so any round fired can be traced to a gun owner. They will try.

Criminals will circumvent whatever system they come up with. Plus there are millions of existing weapons. All this will do is harass legal gun owners.

How many criminals are going to go through the trouble of obtaining a 3D printer and learning how to use it, or the machine tools to finish an 80% lower, when they can just go find Julio, give him 50 bucks and say ‘Yo Quiero Fuego’.

Not really. The pressure used to stamp out the serial numbers is so high that it is embedded into the metal. It can be detected down pretty far. Filing the number off is unlikely these days.

The ability to build your own weapon is as old as the country. I don’t think this will pass constitutional muster.

"Ghost Guns" is another overhyped "threat".

There are very close to 500 million privately owned guns in the United States of America. Most of them are unregistered and untraceable.

Adding 10,000 more unregistered and untraceable firearms a year has no serious effect.

The entire theory of "gun tracing" is bankrupt. It has no cost effective purpose.

The only purpose of the "gun tracing" apparatus, is to set up the start of gun registration. Gun registration has also been shown to be ineffective at reducing crime.

The IQ of the preponderance of criminals precludes them from assembling any firearm or anything else for that matter.
Those persons with the requisite knowledge skills and abilities who do manufacture the like happen to also be the last people that the low iqs want to run into in doing their bidness shenanigans.
I therefore declare this idiotic

“Some are “printed” on 3-D printers and include no metal, allowing owners to carry them through metal detectors undetected.”

These liars are beyond belief. Any part of a firearm that contains the pressure bearing components necessary to contain the forces of propelling a bullet down a barrel (i.e. bolt, bolt carrier, barrel, barrel extension, etc.) MUST be made of some sort of steel alloy. In the case of an AR-15, the lower receiver (which is often 3-D printed and contains the serial number for AR’s commercially sold) can be made of aluminum or polymers, but only because it is not required to contain the huge pressures generated when firing a centerfire cartridge. Even then, the fire control group parts such as the trigger sear, disconnector, and hammer must also be made of a hardened steel.

The one thing that can NEVER be relied upon when listening to the gun grabbing press is the truth. They either flat out lie, distort, or tell half truths.

A ghost rifle can weigh 2.6 kilograms which is roughly equal to the critical mass of californium-252 making it equivalent to an atomic explosion.

The only purpose of the "gun tracing" apparatus, is to set up the start of gun registration. Gun registration has also been shown to be ineffective at reducing crime.

This is exactly the unwritten goal - gun registration. And the purpose has nothing to do with reducing crime, but to make private firearms ownership a crime.

Serial numbers - mean nothing to most perps. Witness the idiots in the Army that were buying guns in Tennessee, and shipping them to gang buddies in Chicago. Sooner or later they were going to be found out... didn't care.

The people that are the focus of these stupid articles - they are the same people that need to learn that 'criminals' don't care about 'laws'.

How about criminals just stealing their guns from law abiding citizens? I doubt many criminals, especially the gang banging punk types shooting up our cities have the skills, equipment and know how to make ghost guns. Just how many ghost guns were used in gun crimes in the urban combat zones…my bet is next to none.
