Germany accuses Putin of 'blackmail' and refuses to back down after Russian President threatened to turn off Europe's gas supplies in HOURS if countries refuse to pay in roubles

Vladimir Putin today threatened to turn off Europe's gas supplies from tomorrow if countries refuse to pay in roubles.

The Russian President, announcing a decree in televised remarks, said foreign buyers would have to 'open rouble accounts in Russian banks' which can be used to pay for 'gas delivered starting from tomorrow'.

'If such payments are not made, we will consider this a default on the part of buyers, with all the ensuing consequences. Nobody sells us anything for free, and we are not going to do charity either - that is, existing contracts will be stopped,' he said.

The move has been seen as a bid to bolster the Russian currency, which fell to historic lows when the West applied sanctions after he sent his army into Ukraine on February 24. Western companies and governments have rejected the demands as a breach of existing contracts, which are set in euros or dollars.

Russia has been hit by sweeping sanctions on its economy and trade since the start of Putin's war in Ukraine but measures by EU governments have not targeted oil and gas contracts with Moscow because many member states are heavily reliant on the Kremlin's supplies.

No argument there. I’m just trying to understand why Putin is having a hissy fit over being paid in euros.

First of all, China is getting a special ally discount. I pinged you to an article about it. You can take out part of your market and expect to get the same price.

They talk a good game, but I doubt Russia wants to be paid in rubles.

They want to do it their way. That would be fine EXCEPT Russia’s got the gas...and the shut offs.

Maybe someone who has paid a bit more attention to the details of sanctions than I can chime in. It appears that much of Russia’s foreign exchange reserves were frozen, about $300 billion. If Russia is paid for their gas in Euro’s and the payment is processed through European banks, will Russia be able to convert the money to say, Rubles or Yuans?

This may be why they are demanding Rubles. Can Russia still convert Euro’s, especially millions or billions of Euro’s? Asking because IDK.

Money does Russia no good if they can’t buy goods with it because their accounts are frozen by Western sanctions.

Germany told Russia they don’t want their oil. Russia said, if you still may want it pay in rubles please.

How hard is that?

Eventually, the ruble will gain strength. So whatever they pay today will be worth ten times the value even a few months from now.

I doubt it would go up that much. It's already about the same level as before the invasion. Russia has no interest in the ruble going up significantly. That would just make everything they export more expensive to the buyers and thus reduce demand.

This is hysterical

On one hand you got the Western European screaming thet Putin this monster

That they put this entire economic boycott on and on the other hand you got them screaming because Putin won’t sell them gas

Really are they all snowflakes?

This whole thing is a bad joke
