Not necessarily...in my state the inmates are more or less grouped together by their crime.

Pedos are kept together.....murderers are kept together etc.....of course this is not an absolute.

Also it’s not impossible for inmates to know what each other’s crimes are. All they need is a name and a contact on the outside to look it up on the state DOC website.
