NEW DELHI (Reuters) -A significant increase in Russian oil imports by India could expose New Delhi to a "great risk" as the United States prepares to step up enforcement of sanctions against Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine, a senior U.S. administration official said.
While the current U.S. sanctions against Russia do not prevent other countries from buying Russian oil, the warning raises expectations that Washington will attempt to restrict other countries' purchases to normal levels.
The U.S. official's comment comes ahead of Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's two-day visit to New Delhi and during the ongoing visit of U.S. deputy national security adviser for economics Daleep Singh.
Refiners in India, the world's third biggest oil importer and consumer, have been snapping up Russian oil through spot tenders since the war broke out on Feb. 24, taking advantage of deep discounts as other buyers back away. India has purchased at least 13 million barrels of Russian oil since Feb. 24, compared with nearly 16 million barrels in all of 2021.
"U.S. has no objection to India buying Russian oil provided it buys it at discount, without significantly increasing from previous years," said the source who spoke on condition of anonymity. "Some increase is allowed," said the source, who did not offer more detail.

To which India and others say, BITE ME!, as they continue what is best for the interests of their people.
America can mind its own business
This.
What is “great risk?”
Managing our lives is not enough. They are now telling countries what they can do for their entire population.
How to make friends and influence people.
China and India are going to tell us to get lost. In fact it may cause an alliancee of convince to form between China and India to oppose the West. So now the entire Asian continent is against us and Europe.
It’s time for everyone to stop the cooperation.
India stood up against the might of the whole British Empire and won their independence (sound familiar?).
Does anyone think these people are going to be cowered by a demented evil drooling old fool who doesn't know what day of the week it is?
If the US were serious about influencing India we’d threaten to send all of their H1B’s back home.
I think the Biden admin push against countries like India will backfire. Instead of harming India’s relations with Russia - it buys 60% of its military hardware from Russia, it will only move them closer. While Russia is finding some alliance of convenience (for the moment) whith China, as a balance against the U.S., India will see greater cooperation with Russia as a balance against China’s pushes against India.
The real world is becoming more realpolitic and any “new world order” is a work in progress not any fixed done deal.
So now the corrupt, evil Clinton/Obama/Biden puppet regime are threatening India, which will just push them closer to Russia.
Indian PM Modi (one of the good guys) is a big MAGA supporter of Trump. We should encourage greater (not less) ties with India.
No that is not what this is “all” about.
The long brewing clash between an indepdent Ukraine, exercising its independence from Moscow began not in 2014 - when Putin took the first piece of Ukraine territory; it began with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and Putin has seen that dissolution as a “Russian” calamity ever sense, and he began arming Russia for todays war 20 years ago.
Corruption is a bgean deal but it is not the cause of Putin’s war on Ukraine.
“So now the entire Asian continent is against us and Europe.”
You seriously think ALL THE REST OF ASIA stands with China??? You don’t know Asia very well.
Whoever made the suggestion to India will be forever by India branded as a fool.
This administration is destroying our relations with the rest of the world.
Arrogant lecturing and name calling and finger pointing does not make or keep friends....
Some lessons can only be learned the hard way.
Alliance of convince.
I don't think the issue is "standing with China". Of the Asian countries, only Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea seem to be in a position where they have to kiss Uncle Sam's butt when he tells the world to stand with the US against Russia.
something the jo Brandon is completely unfamiliar with...
